Hi,

I am new here. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes about 2 years ago and started on medication. The dosages were gradually increased until I reached the maximum dosage allowed. Blood sugar levels were still too high. About a month ago, I was started on insulin. It seems to be working.

I have a bunch of what are probably rookie questions about meds, blood testing, insulin injections, diet, exercise, etc. Should I post my questions in the newbie section (Newly Diagnosed), the general section (Diabetes Discussions), or in the more specific sections? I'm wondering if the specific sections are more for more advanced or complicated questions or from more experienced users.

Thanks

Just ask away and everyone will answer your questions as insulin doses can be high due to you being insulin resistant as that is the same for me as mine is nearly 200 units a day but I know people that take more due to the resistance to insulin and as for testing I'm testing before each meal as my diabetes doctor wants me to do it that way until I see him again next week and injection sites are in your stomach around your belly button just think of it as your bum and you will get the Idea and in the outside of your outer thighs and do not inject on the same spot for each injection as you will get lumps there so put it in at different spots on each injection and that way you will find it easy to your liking and diet I use a low carb diet and only have around 20-30 grams of carbohydrates a day and that way I can do whatever I need to each day and that includes exercise or what I can do but what I can do is see if I can get a hold of someone who can help you just as much as me and you can have some more information about it all

For the present 'Newly Diagnosed' but 'Ask a Question' is fine too. Do not worry where you post a thread the worst thing to happen would be a mod coming along to ask if you would like it moved, sometimes just so more members will see it.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Tagging @daisy1 for the info pack offered to all newcomers.

You can post anywhere you like. Many of us just check the 'recent posts' section without checking what forum it is posted in. Ask a question and Discussions work fine for almost anything.

Holy Toledo! Is the period (.) key on your keyboard busted? :) That has to be the longest run-on sentence I have ever seen and I am a notorious runner-on of sentences. o_O

Thanks for the tips. I'll just fire away wherever it seems like a good fit.

PS: Is it possible to give a post more than one "rating"? I couldn't see how to do that. I wanted to give you both "Humorous" and "Friendly" in addition to "Like".

PS: When I clicked on "Post Reply", I got a warning message saying that I needed to wait "1 second". What;s that about?

Nope. It's one of the things that makes diabetes hard to live with, choosing the right rating for a post on this forum.

The expert trick is working together. In this case I've added an 'informative', as there's lots of useful information there, but friendly would have been appropriate in my opinion as well.
There has been a case where someone collected all the ratings for one reaction (with motivations in the comments too), but that was a long time ago.

Hi @Sugar High ,

Welcome to the forum.
I'm one of those "worst things to happen." ;)(as the "riff "from "Bad to the bone" plays in the background.)

One tip, that may help you. Go into your personal details & where is says "Type of diabetes:" On the drop down menu, pick "Insulin-dependant type 2." This will help direct reply response from members with any specific enquiries, regarding your prescribed medication.

There is also a Type 2 with insulin section on the forum too.

Hope this helps! :)

I don't see that entry in the list. I did select "Type 2" and under treatment I selected "Insulin".

You should see something like this? Click the bar where the bottom arrow is, then select where the top red arrow points.
It should aknowledge with a tick?

Then save the settings.

Hope this helps.... :)

My screen looks just like yours except that the list is:
  • Type 1
  • Type 2
  • Gestational
  • Insipidus
  • . . .
There is no "Insulin-Dependent Type 2" entry listed. Unless the Alzheimer's is worse than I thought.

OK? There used to be an older version that for some reason had 2 type 2 options listed.? One of which changed the status to insulin dependant T2.

But don't worry about it for now. Just give us a subtle hint as to your meds when starting a topic...;)
There's always a "workaround." :D

@Sugar High
Hello and welcome to the Forum :) Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it interesting and helpful.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 147,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

You may also be interested to read questions to ask at a diabetic clinic.

Do all of the different ratings count towards your "Like" count or just Likes?

Do I have a like count? Cool!

edit: Ah, I think I've found it! Is it the 'ratings received' thing? It holds links to every post someone liked or otherwise put an icon under. Good to see I give about as much as I get: the ratings received go on for 255 pages and the ratings given for 257. All in all I guess that means I should get a life...

If you can't sort out the info under your avatar you could put your Type 2 Insulin Dependant status in your signature (see my signature below), it's better than having to type it out every time. Your edit sig function is on your profile page.

Agree, but many people (like me) will overlook the signature...
On the other hand, if relevant to my answer, I do look up the information on profiles before answering.

Aye, that's true but it's better than nowt and other members do read sigs sometimes.
