Which type of exercise is best?

I am about to start a new exercise programme which involves 5 minutes cross-trainer, 10 minutes rowing machine followed by a series of resistance exercises. I've read somewhere that building extra muscle is beneficial for type 2 diabetics. Or should I be concentrating more on a cardiovascular regime? My programme at my previous gym involved a mixture of both CV and resistance and I managed to reduce my weight (along with a low/moderate low carb diet) from 10 stone 7 to 9 stone 9 between July and December. I was wondering which regime to follow - resistance or CV - and what percentage should be apportioned to each. Has anyone any experience of this?
