Pizza (makes my BG go through the roof), Pasta & potatoes.
Hi,

I am type 2 diagnosed a month ago and have not touched and booze since diagnosis. I have bought the carb counter book and noted that whisky has hardly any carbs wheras beer and cider have loads. Does this mean it is ok to have a few glasses of Whisky without upsetting my BG?

Hey Carl...Its never wise to get wasted on anything when you're a diabetic in case of very high or very low BG and not being able to recognize the symptoms. I'm a T1 diabetic and when out I always drink spirits with a sugar-free mixer and my sugar levels have always been ok. Just do a test before you go out and monitor your BG when you're drinking. Good luck!

hi Carl,
there's a long thread on here somewhere about diabetics and alcohol - have a look.
Do you test your levels yourself with a meter? That way you can check what effect whiskey (sorry, being Irish I spell it with an "e") has on you. Personally I find, as do many others, that alcohol (in moderation) actually lowers your blood sugar, so is far from a bad thing. However, it all depends what your normal blood sugar levels are to begin with.
A glass of whiskey (or a couple of glasses of red wine) of an evening is very unlikely to do you much harm and may even be good - but the only way to be sure is to test your levels yourself before and two hours after, and see what's happening.
