My toddler son was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and in hospital 8 days with DKA. He went straight onto a pump. The team have been good but I want a second opinion and consultation to discuss the diagnosis, treatment, management and also secondary complications as no mention of foot or eye care has been made...

Can anyone advise?

Thanks x

Try gettin a referral to Great Ormond Street or one of the other children's hospitals.

There is no problem with Hospitals being mentioned in this instance on the Forum but names of individual HCP's are not allowed. Therefore if members wish to recommend an individual please use the pm system only.

If names are posted openly they will have to be deleted.

Sorry - still trying to get to grips with the site. Mainly, I just need to know how to go about finding the critters...I tried nhschoices, but couldna make head nor tail of it...

So, main thought really was if anyone had experience of this process and how did they do it? Do I need to get my GP (currently changing mine as the one I took our little boy to tried to send him home with calpol and a diagnosis of a mild chest infection) to refer me?

Thanks x

No problem.

The best thing to do when you see your new GP is to ask for a referral to a Paediatric
Diabetic Specialist near to you. There may be a Diabetic Clinic at a nearby Hospital where hopefully you will get the best treatment. Once you have a name you can even do some research on the net to check the person out more thoroughly.

Hi.

Well, I have been through a few specilist in my time..some better than others. All, except the current one are now retired.

I can honestly say however, that teh true care, education and help has alwas come from one of teh specilists team, (diabetic specilist nurse, the other Drs in the clinic etc).

Listening to Ken, I will not give name, but when I was diagnosed at 4, I was lucky enough to be in teh care of a much published specilist, known throughout the country...and he was very good, BUT, it was his team that made the difference...also, site like this help so much.

I am not trying to dissuade you from seeking a second opinion, but I wondered whether you just needed to give teh clinic a call, and try and get hold of teh nurse, and arrange for a chat with her? I am not surprised that they haven't really gone into the feet and eyes things yet..I guess that they are concentrating on his control? Fabulous that you are keen and getting involved etc...that certainly is teh way forward for you and your son.

best of luck

I'm in Australia but think that it wouldn't matter who you saw it wouldn't change your child's diagnosis or basic management/treatment. You will end up being the person who knows the most about your child's diabetes and ultimately be telling the Endo, Paed, GP, DN about it rather than the other way around.

You certainly aren't the first parent to be sent home told that your child has a flu or some other diagnosis. I know a parent who was sent home 3 times before someone finally did a blood sugar test. I must admit that I knew some of the symptoms of diabetes and when I told the Emergency staff my son had been thirsty they did a test straight away. Even so, he had a bsl of 86 and spent the next month in hospital after also getting ill.

Hope you find some people you are comfortable with. It is only early days for you and it takes some time for a routine to form and bsl's to settle. Hope your son is coping well although I'm sure it is the parents that suffer the most at diagnosis.
