why do all posts at the moment need capital letters ?

My title says it all.
I've never been a subscriber to the 'all capitals are shouting' brigade.
Just noticing a very recent trend.

Some say in life 'sleep on it.' Others 'never go to bed without resolving a problem.'
Do what works best for you, but I'll notice any post whether its in capitals or not :?

Geoff - I'm a Secretary who was trained in 1969 - well before word processing and the internet with all it's etiquette rules.

I'm well aware that typing in capitals is regarded as shouting these days, but in my day, capitals were used as a matter of course for all headings and titles in order to separate them from the body of the text and to show the reader clearly what the topic of the body of text was about.

We also used commas and full stops and semi colons in those days and I know exactly how and where to use them. Today's fashion for writing is all about speed whereas in the past it was about accuracy coupled with presentation and uniformity.

Personally, I feel that with the advent of word processing, internet etc., speed has become the priority, which is the real reason why capitals are not used, why punctuation is left out of addresses etc., - because they take up extra key depressions, which of course, takes up extra time. And so text communication has become as rushed as many of the conversations we have these days.

Have you ever noticed how fast some school children speak? It's because they're being hurried through life at the rate of knots so that they can become tomorrow's high speed talkers and texters of information - because the belief is that time is money and there are some who feel that making money is all important.

As you can see ... I enjoy taking my time and I intend to enjoy my journey through life at my own speed and in my own way - that includes using CAPITALS as a means of EMPHASIS and HIGHLIGHTING.
 
Grace - can't you see? This is just another of those carping critics - want revenge when cannot win the argument.

I too was trained as a touch typist on manual typewriters. However, I have had to adjust to the modern way of doing things. And capitals are nowadays considered to be shouting everywhere on the internet and in forums. Its just the way it is.

We have all been discussing sensitivity to others in some depth recently.

as 99% of the internet forum world now consider me to be shouting or rude when using capitals, I am being sensitive to the new rules, and not offending people by continuing to use them for emphasis and highlighting.

I use bolding for that instead, unless I know the person I am responding too very well.
 
Well, that's because technology marches on. Specifically, we are no longer restricted to using case for emphasis and layout because someone invented HTML - using all caps for headings, emphasis, etc will look very pretty indeed but won't help a blind person make sense of it (whereas properly used <h>, <em>,<strong> will allow text-to-speech software to commicate the meaning)
 

Lucy, I'm perfectly happy to use the emboldening or the italic or the underline facilities to add emphasis to text because believe it or not I understand that just as when speaking, we need to use inflection in our text in order for the proper meaning to be conveyed to the reader. Without it we simply have flat, inflectionless text which can very easily be misconstrued.

By the way ... I'm really glad that my previous SHOUTING has actually brought the attention of some people to this particular topic. There are occasions where it's necessary to shout in order to be heard.

I DO ALL MY EMAILS TEXT ETC IN CAPITALS I AM NO TYPIST AND MY SIGHT IS BAD SO HENCE THE CAPITALS SO I CAN SEE QUICK AND EASY WHEN I TYPE. I HAD NO IDEA THAT THIS WAS CONSIDERED AS SHOUTING!!!!

MAMA2X I don't think it used to be :? but I do know what you mean with eyesight. I have to use a magnifying glass now and my big 6ft wide kitchen window. So I might be joining you soon, OH DEAR :wink:

I have no problem with text in capitals MAMA, I can think of worse things in text than a few capital letters. I hope you'll be allowed to continue using them.

Writing in caps has been considered shouting for as long as there has been internet chat rooms and forums.

For those who find small writing hard to read did you know that you can change the size of the text on the forum (or any web page) simply by holding down the Control [Ctrl] key and then tapping the [+] key. each tap of the [+] key will increase the text size, to make it smaller again just hold down the Control key and tap the [-] key :thumbup:
 
tHanx For That Great tip.I dont face book tweet or do much text I only joined forum to try and sort out diabetes and find out information but now I know how to use my computer better!!!!

Thanks for the tip Sid. I am relatively newish to the internet and forums. Like you MAMA2X ,I dont do facebook or twitter, my duaghter is good with the computer, but she will lean over and touch the keys to move things that I want to do myself :roll: RRB
 

Infuriating isn't it? Worse is when they've finished fluttering around your keyboard like a magic wand, they smile smugly and expect you to know how to do it yourself now. :eh:

Its a bit like looking at someones newspaper whilst on the train........infruiating :x not for methough :wink: , for them, personally I love reading a good book, not the kindle thingy though, a proper paper book, especially if its second hand, so much history :x RRB

I've always loved books and spent hours in the library when I was a kid. Then I went through a period of collecting books, had all kinds of lovely antique books with beautiful illustrations. Then I looked around my house one day and realised they'd taken over the house and so I gave the antiques to my sons, and gave the rest to the local library. That was it then, book compulsion over. Bought a kindle, loved it and have now lost the charging cable! :roll:
