Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else here has this, or can shed any light on this,

When I eat, example, today for dinner, I had a baked potato with smoked salmon and brie,
with a side of coleslaw, I took 7 units of insulin, my pre dinner BG was 5.7, I ate at 20:30, at 23:00 my BG was 7.7...
good stuff.... then at midnight my levels are up to 10.7

This happens quite a lot, I ask the diabetic nurse at the hospital and my GP, who both look at me blankly and skate off to another subject,

9 times out of 10 my levels 2 hrs after food are lower than 3 hrs after food, is this just my metabolism? Or something else?
My levels to return to between 5 & 6 by the morning, I was just wondering how to avoid going into double figures after food.

Thanks

I would imagine it's to do with the cheese, fats slow down the absorbtion of carbs and therefore you may find that you get a climb later on after eating instead. Google 'Pizza effect' and it will explain in more detail.

I know some people try and counteract this by splitting their fast acting injection into 2 (though that sounds like a lot of guess-work and hassle to me!) I think with a pump you can do that more easily though

Thanks for that, I'll look into that, I know I actually
stopped eating pizza because of the effect it has on me
but I thought it was due to the pizza sauce/high fat content, makes
sense, about the cheese, even though the team at the hospital
encourage me to eat cheese as I'm slim.... Hmmmmm :)

:( yes i have the same proplem no matter what i eat my sugers go up and i get so fed up with this
it seems to take a long time for the sugers to go down after eating food

I'm sure one of the more informed on this board (there are a lot of knowledgeable people here) will be able to help you out on this,

Ok doing that now but nit much look so far, how about friut which is best. As I like most strawberries grapes oranges banana plums cherries what do I cut out please

I had the same thing with pizza.
Things that slow your digestion mess things up.

Is this happening all the times with all meals or just with certain meals?
Perhaps if it is just with meals that have high fat content that is slowing absorption you can try a different injection site. I know that if I eat certain meals it works better for me if I inject my novorapid into my bum or thigh.

Of course if it is all the time then maybe your ratios are off for dinner or maybe your background insulin is off.
What basal insulin are you on and at what times?
