Why do the Tabs cost so Much

Is there anything we as a collective set of people can do to try and get the price of these tabs down?

What about contacting the companies and asking why they are so expensive.

Type 2s are being blamed theirselves for their condition through eating badly but it is not always the case. You hear on the news of more younger people getting diabetise through their bad eating habits but what about those that don't have bad eating habits who get diabetise?

If we as type 2s don't start to bring our BS down and control the way we eat its said that eventually we will end up on insulin and many other complcations being on insulin we then get our tabs on prescription. The cost of insulin and other things through not controlling your diabetics whilst type 2 surely must out weigh the cost of the tabs.

As you are just relying on the meds to keep you BS down how do you know what food has a bad effect on you that then increase you BS and they then increase your prescription and more cost in the end to the NHS.

I haven't tested for a few weeks now and am really worried I did order some tabs from a company that was recommended on this forum which were a bit cheaper but they were out of stock. I do plan now that I have retired to go and plead with my doctor to give me tabs - with things getting tighter on the NHS I don't hold out much hope.

I haven't tried Ebay but this now seems to be the next step.

Wish I could help you. Where do you live? I am very fortunate., I get all my tabs etc free from my local surgery.
take care

If you are retired why are you paying and diabetics on tabs do not pay anyway.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here - the NHS does negogiate prices for tabs and tend not to use branded tabs if possible.

In Wales all prescriptions are free!

I think Sue means strips. They are expensive because the meter manufacturers have a captive market once we have a meter and want to test we have to have the test strips  I have just bought 50 strips for £10 plus postage on e bay still a rip off but cheaper than most. Where do they get them from? I have noticed that the same sellers have lots of boxes of strips so they cant be being prescribed them for themselves.Do they buy them from other DBs then sell them on at a profit .
Answers on a postcard please

I did once buy a couple of boxes of strips on eBay, which had pharmacy lables partly torn off them. they had obviously been prescribed for someone.
However I suspect the regular and ethical sellers have set up as legal dealers and make a small profit per item and depend on bulk sales.

Hi Sue Why are you paying for test strips?, has someone else has already said that if you are a diagnosed diabetic you do not have to pay. ( as you are a pensioner also you definietly do not pay) I have received both meters ( from companies) and test strips from the NHS free for 22 years.

Can we just clarify this for the newly diagnosed members as it has been mentioned here and elsewhere.

To get free prescriptions the criteria is that you are a Diabetic AND you are on anti-diabetic medication, therefore if you are diet only you do NOT get free prescriptions. You are correct about free prescriptions for Over 60's though.

I am db on metformin 67years young, but my GP will not prescribe strips anymore I had them for about 9 months then I was told I didnt need to test ,my meds would control my bgs. No amount of pleading or reasoning would change his mind I told him I would buy my own strips because I needed to know how well I was managing my bgs and that I was a pensioner etc but I am buying my own strips  I was asked by DN if I was testing I told her I was but wasnt being given strips, she said nothing so no joy there .I will try again though has anyone any ideas?
