All I've had for breakfast was 2 shredded wheat, skimmed milk and a coffee.
Going to bed was 4.2.

I've read on here about the Dawn Phenomenon, but such a big difference!!!
The shredded wheat box says nothing added.

What was your BG before breakfast?

Two shredded wheat is probably about 30 gm carbs which is a lot!!I couldn't cope with that amount of carbs first thing in the morning.

Hi Marzeater,

As Sue has said, you might want to try doing a test just before breakfast, to see whether the
rise is happening overnight or if it's largely down to your breakfast.

Most people tend to be naturally more insulin resistant during the early morning, meaning this
is when your body will be at its most sensitive to carbohydrate. Caffeine also has a tendency to increase insulin resistance.

You should also bear in mind that, although Shredded Wheat has no added sugar, its starch
content will be broken down into glucose just as quickly as sugar.
Glycemic index info
Table sugar (sucrose): 64
Shredded Wheat: 67
(higher rating=quicker release)

All the best,
timo.

I was having the same problems and couldn't understand why but I've now been lucky enough to go on a dose adjustment course (similar to DAFNE) at my local hospital and now feel able to assess all the variables when I do my early morning BG test.

At 4.2 you went to bed pretty low so your body may well have compensated during the night and pushed up your BG to avoid hypo. So early morning BG test is essential.

Despite no sugar Shredded Wheat is high carb (nearly 70g per 100g) and to eat two I would need about 8 units of insulin.

My own tolerance to insulin is different in the morning so instead of 1 unit for every 10g of carbs i have to up it to 1.25 units per 10g of carbs.

It's not easy but the three days on the course was probably the best education I've had since I was diagnosed nearly eleven years ago. If you get the chance to go on one take it!

Good luck

For those of you who are as confused as me about the carb content of Shredded Wheat I checked in my Collins Gem Carb Counter book first and got the same as Sue. About 30g carbs ?
Then I checked the Collins Gem Calorie Counter book and got the same as Stewpid ? Nearly 70g carbs per 100g

Just one of life's little Idiosyncrasy's I suppose. I think we can safely say they are high in carbs. Makes my Bg levels rocket if I try just one !!

If you want to check out other Cereals have a look here fore nutrition information.

It's all the maths.

I don't have a packet to hand but I'm guessing that two SW's weigh about 50g (they are mostly air after all). On the basis that they are about 70g of carb per 100g of weight you probably get about 35g carb in two.

Use the formula : Total carbs per 100g / 100 x Weight of food = 70/100 x 50 = 35g of carb

So both reference books are right, just looking at the same problem from two directions.
