Why is my BG so high?

I'm trying to low carb for a while to control my sugars a lot better. However I think I must be doing something wrong somewhere. My BGs seem to keep rising steeply in the evening. For example, I had 2 sausages, a handful of sweet corn, loads of lettuce cucumber and cheese with a little Caesar sauce on. Injected 2 QA for approx 20g carbs. I was 7.1 before dinner and 17.6 after 2 hours. Why why why? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone help

Was this a one off or a regular occurance ? Could be your ratio needs adjusting or maybe you underestimated the carb content ? Maybe your basal is too low ? Difficult to say with so little info. Keep a diary for a week of all BG readings, carbs an insulin and discuss with your DSN or doc.

First of all, well done for trying Low Carb. Many people have benefited from it.

Sometimes the devil is the detail. I have found sneaky carbs hiding everywhere, and they may add up.
  • Sausages. Often there are carbs added as fillers. For example: Tesco British Pork Sausages, 7g carbs each.
  • Sweetcorn. I'm not sure how big is a handful, but 100g (half a small can, which isn't a lot) may have up to 19g carbs,
  • Caesar Sauce. Was it low-fat? Shop bought low-fat sauces and salad dressings may be high in carbs, 3g/tbs or more.
Proteins may also convert into glucose, but it usually takes longer than two hours. Depending from the situation, it may take three to six hours, I seem to remember, so perhaps proteins isn't the issue here. I would be more inclined to guess that perhaps the ratio carbs/insulin may have not been exactly matched. I hope it helps, and good luck!

Think you all could be right about the protein. Just had pork chops cucumber lettuce and cheese this evening and it still went up to 12 from 6. Or maybe my levemir runs out a bit early. I usually take it before bed
