Will my kids be diabetic?

I'm a type1, i was diagnosed at 11 even though i have no immediate family with diabetes. I am 25 now and about to become a dad this year for the first time :D and was wondering what the chances them becoming diabetic? :(
 
Welcome to the forum,another Scot I see.Although type 1 can run in families sometimes it happens for other reasons.Were you ever told why you got it? Discuss it with your doctor and see what he/she says about it.
 
Thanks read through the link, i can't say its eased my concerns but at least i know roughly the chances. Sue, Dr A does think infections and illness when i was an infant may be the cause of my d but even he can't be sure (and hes a legend) my mum couldn't give birth naturally aswell (discovered at the time) so it was traumatic for me and mum. At least junior would be treated in Scotland!!!!
 
i got type 1 when i was 17 had my four kids when i was in my thirtys they are now 23,22,20,18.got told by my diabetes specialist that my children will have as much chance of gettingdiabetes as a normal couple.my partner has no-one in his family with any type of diabetes nor have i.I was the only one of five children in my family to get this condition.My parents never had it nor my grandparents nor my greatgrandparents.it is not hereditory like type 2.No one knows how mine started.i was always slim as a kid and went even skinnier before diagnosed.I was never ill and very sporty and very healthy.I was told i would be lucky if i had any children and had 4!!!THANK GOD NONE OF THEM HAVE ANY TYPE OF DIABETES AND I HOPE THEY NEVER DO.sO I THINK YOU SHOULD BE LUCKY AND YOUR CHILD WILL BE OK.Good luck anyway and hope everythink turns out ok
 
If one child in a family has diabetes mellitus (DM), then there is a risk of up to one in ten that his brother or sister may be similarly affected.

But we still do not know why diabetes occurs. At least four genes are known to be important in determining sensitivity to the development of damaged islet cells in the pancreas and subsequent diabetes.

Having said that, most of the susceptibility to DM is environmentally acquired rather than inherited in our genes. For example, we know that certain viruses such as rubella, mumps and Coxsackie virus all have the ability to damage the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
 
Hi this was one of my major concerns.

I have been told that even though there are allot of evidance that type 1 i heridary there is also evidance to support it can be caused after a viral illness. I have been told that my condition does not make a significant differance? I am not really sure what to belive, but hope that one day it wont affect if i decide to have kids in the future
