Hi everyone

So my hubby is treating me to dinner at a nice restaurant next week, where we will be doing a 7 course tasting menu.

They also have an option where you can pair a different wine with each course. It will probably be a half glass or less of each.

I'm on NovoRapid for bolus only, at about 1:7. I know wine is sweet and therefore sugary, but I heard you don't need to bolus for alcohol? It's actually my first time having a drink since I've started insulin so I'd like some advice please ☺️

hi there @tpaz
with a 7 course tasting meal there are a few D hurdles

the meal will last a while meaning split dosing
the wines will vary - reds and whites -- but most likely only the dessert will be sweet white unless they pair a pate with a sweet white at the beginning.

normally I don't bolus for wine but I do count on the food being close to double the carbs I think it will be based on home food ( if that makes sense )

can you get hold of the menu beforehand ?

I too doubt the wine will be sweet. I don't bolus for wine at all. In fact, if you're sipping wine but your portions are small, then you may even feel slightly low. I tend to find tasting menus can have little mini portions so be careful with the carb counting. Look at the food and assess the contents and try to align it to something you eat at home then assess the portion and your bolus accordingly. For a starter with minimal carbs I often don't bolus as I find that helps offset the alcohol in the wine.

I'd inject for each course as it appears in front of me. I'd also test at regular intervals so I could make sure my blood sugar was on track.

Enjoy your meal - what a lovely treat!

Wine does not spike me at all. On the contrary, it can make me go slightly low at times. Definitely do not bolus for the wine.

It is good advice by @himtoo to try to get hold of the menu in advance. I would probably bolus just twice. For the starters and then the main course. I would ask for cheese instead of a sweet dessert perhaps.

This is all very interesting to me. I always read about how wine has a high sugar content, and even though I love it, I try to stay away from it.

I think I will bolus for 30gr of carbs at the start of the meal and test midway through the meal to see how I'm doing and take it from there.

Dessert is my absolute weakness, especially at a good restaurant. I'll get it but only have 2 or 3 bites of it.

I'm not sure where this comes from. Dry white wine and most red wines have around 3g per 150ml, so most of us find it to be fine and don't need to bolus, even when drinking an entire bottle (oops - wasn't supposed to say that....)

I never bolus for wine. As others have said it lowers me. I don't often have extended eating periods with 'courses' but on the occasion I have I took half a bolus for the appetizer and then within 30 min we had our entre so I blouses as normal but tried to eat the same portions I eat at home. I got very close.

I would be more concerned about the size of the food/ meal than the wine. In fact I have 2 drinks every night. One before dinner and one during. It keeps me lower. Distilled alcohol lower than wine

Definitely go for it.

By the way you mentioned you have not had wine since diagnosis. Why not practice a bit at home before going to the restaurant? It will give you more self-confidence. I have to admit I practice a lot with wine :)

Enjoy the restaurant and let us know how it went!
