Hi,

Im looking for some advice please.
Its the first time ive been ill since ive been diagnosed with diabetes, but i currently have the winter sickness bug and all that comes with it.
Problem being,i cant eat, if i even think about it i feel sick and will be sick - i didnt feel so bad this morning so took my meds with cereal, but i have got worse throught the day.
My levels are currently 3.8 and its only early evening, i do tend to need levels of around 5.5+ to go to bed on.
Wondered if anyone could suggest anything that may raise my levels a bit, i havent taken my 2nd dose of meds today and have tried drinks but im not doing so well!!!!
Any ideas, gratefully recieved.

I would suggest sugary fluids, ribena hot or cold, or lucozade anything that will keep your sugar up and you hydrated. Even tea with sugar in it if you can face it. Drink what you fancy though. You are doing really well with your blood sugar's if you're unwell mine rocket!
Good luck

Hi r_smi!

Hope you're feeling a bit better! I had this a few weeks back. I took my usual dose of basal insulin but no fast-acting as i wasn't eating. I made sure to drink plenty of water in small sips - even though I brought a lot of it back up, at least some stayed put! This is absolutely critical as dehydration will raise your BG quickly. I also took a few small sips of full-fat Coke when my BG fell a little low. That worked very well for me and actually made me feel loads better - the fizziness actually helped settle my stomach.

Try to steer clear of anything with milk in it as it is likely to make you worse. After several hours, I was able to force down (and unexpectedly keep down) half a Ryvita. After that, I started getting better really quickly, so if you can keep a small amount of dry carb down, I'd recommend it!

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for your ideas, I think I shall have to give the drinks a go. Normally my levels go high too so don't know whats going on there!
Hope everyone avoids it!

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling rough.

A few weeks back hubby and I got struck down by something similar. Of course the right thing to do is to stay as hydrated as you can but after a couple days when symptoms are starting to ease a bit, cold fluids can be more than a bit offputting..I tend to avoid tea and coffee because of the milk.

Not sure if you have heard of Marigold Bouillon Powder, it's a natural veggie stock (comes in a tub) that is available at most supermarkets. It makes a lovely savoury hot drink too and I found it very soothing after a few days of fruit tea! You could also try dipping a ryvita into it, might help to ease the sickly feeling and steady your levels a bit.

Hope you feel better soon
