Hi everyone I'm type 2diabetic on insulin I've been sent home for three months which I think is wrong,I rang Diabetes UK today and my diabetic nurse who both say I should be able to work as long as I social distance which is irrelevant anyway as everyone has to,I rang my work and told them all this and I'm not on the vulnerable list and they said no it's policy you can't work yet three weeks ago it was the government who said I couldn't work, they said I had underlying medical issues,my bloods are always between 6.5 8.0 max,to me this is discrimination,I've contacted ACAS and waiting for a link to put in a complaint, why can't the government or whoever inform these work places that we can work and there policies are invalid

You're "vulnerable" but not "extremely vulnerable"/"shielded" - those guys (mainly folks with suppressed immune systems) have been advised to stay at home. We haven't.

I'm type 1, same category as you, we're told to be extra careful about social distancing. Your workplace has the wrong story, but I'm not surprised. Media in general seems to be confusing the 2 categories, same as they confuse the different forms of diabetes.

Point your work at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/advice-for-people-at-high-risk for the official story

Hi Kevin, your experience seems to be the opposite of most of us. What work do you do and are they still paying you? x

Hi I work for the council driving school buses but do different things aswell with them, they are paying me but I feel I can still work, since I stopped working my bloods have gone up a bit so I see it doing more harm to me than any good x

Thanks for replying. Well, in many ways I am quite impressed with how your work have responded to keep you and your passengers safe. I wish other Employers would take it equally seriously. I do get your frustration thought if you think you are able to do other tasks but don't forget EVERYONE is being asked to work from home 'where possible' so it's not just the vulnerable. The other things you could do, can they be done from home to keep you busy? x

We have no passengers at the moment as schools are closed,I drive special needs children to school. The thing is now they are delivering things to vulnerable people meaning I would be using the two metre rule anyway,I just think what they are doing is discrimination when the medical professionals say I'm ok to work.x

Hi. There is no reason for you to stay away from work due to the diabetes. Is that the reason you have been given? If so that is discrimination through ignorance.

Hi,yes three months isolation they've told me,at first it was a government guideline now it's my works policy all of a sudden, load of rubbish as far as I'm concerned,I just wish someone with any clout would educate these people

When all this kicked off a few weeks back I was told by my employer that I had to self isolate for 12 weeks as I was on the government vulnerable list. I asked if this was compulsory and could they force me to stay at home. The HR dept got back to me within a few hours and stated that , no it wasn’t compulsory but only advisory. If I was happy to be at work then they had to accept my decision. Ironically 2 weeks later the whole factory got put in furlough, nonetheless at the time they couldn’t force self isolation.

Hi not yet as all this has only taken place today as in me researching stuff, been off since 19th march but will get in touch with the union tomorrow,my work place just keep banging on about their policy

I don’t perceive it as discrimination but your employer exercising their duty of care by deciding that you are vulnerable and are willing to pay you not to be at work and put yourself at risk. If they let you carry on working and you caught Covid-19 you would then be saying that they should not have made you work. There are a number of threads on here from members worried about the consequences because they have been made to work - at least that’s one concern that you don’t have.
