World Diabetes Day theme For 2014-2016, healthy living and diabetes will be the World Diabetes Day theme, with the focus on helping people start the day with a healthy breakfast that can control blood sugar levels and keep you full. A healthy breakfast can reduce blood sugar levels and prevent complications emerging in all types of diabetes mellitus, but do you know what to eat? Traditional breakfast foods such as cereals and toast can contain carbohydrates and sugars that may cause your blood sugar levels to rise. This is where research can improve your health and your diabetes - choosing low sugar, high fibre cereals, wholegrain bread, fish or eggs provide much healthier breakfast options. World Diabetes Day origins World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the IDF and World Health Organisation, who were responding to concerns that diabetes was posing an escalating health threat. Over the last 23 years, the message has been spread internationally and diabetes awareness is currently higher than ever before. Research into a diabetes cure could see results in this generation, which is in no small part due to the success of World Diabetes Day across the last three decades. Diabetes.co.uk is raising awareness for people with diabetes by doing a #BloodSugarSelfie for World Diabetes Day - why not share one of your blood glucose meter and your breakfast?
