Just read the DUCK newsletter in my email and apparently today is World Diabetes Day

This is the first Ive heard of this and its the same every year, why is it not given more prominence in the national media? Is someone in the DUK press office asleep? Is WDD the best kept secret in the diabetes world?

Perhaps its just me and it has been mentioned on The One Show and other topical news programs I dont read newspapers so perhaps it has been spread across all the national press, maybe I'm wrong, am I?

Your thoughts?

Don't know about the UK press Sid.
Grace and I did mention it the other day, unfortunately other events swamped any notice of it.
There will be some places lit up in blue today including the London Eye and the fountains in Trafalgar square. There's a list of other places in this thread.

I put a couple of photos from a previous year on there. It would be good if anyone lived near a lit up building to see some photos.

As for the Big Blue Test (very much part of the online diabetes community elsewhere, doesn't seem to catch peoples imagination on here :( )

But
Not only did we reach our goal of 20,000 Big Blue Tests. We did it before the our deadline of November 14th.
We are so happy that so many people (just about 7,000 individual Big Blue Testers) logged onto BigBlueTest.org or used the iPhone app to tell us about how they are getting active. Thanks to all of your activity, we are able to deliver $100,000 in grant money to some great organizations (like FHADIMAC in Haiti) that are providing life-saving supplies and services to people with diabetes that are in need.

Don’t let the 20,000 number stop you. Let’s collectively blow this goal out of the water. Continue to log your Big Blue Tests using the iPhone app and at BigBlueTest.org!

Thanks for that link Phoenix ... I'm saving all the links I find on the forum so that I can read through them and pass them on to my kids when they ask for more info. :)

My son knew it was diabetes day...

As that's the first thing is said to me this morning when he got home 'did I know'

I think what happens, is that a week hardly goes by without some mention of diabetes in the media, so when it comes to Diabetes Day, it's falls on deaf ears!

Video released for World Diabetes Day.

Innocent Eyes, tells the story of what it is like to be a father of a type 1 child
CWD; Children with Diabetes, Dads music track and video. Raising money for
Innocent Eyes, http://www.innocenteyescharity.co.uk download the track, all proceeds from the track go to JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Well its refreshing to know that some people are making the effort to do things to promote awareness  And I feel rather embarrassed that I sit here and do nothing.

@phoenix....That is a very very sad video, all I can say is I am glad I am a grumpy old man with T2 and did not have to live my life from childhood dealing with T1 on a daily basis, and it brings home a little of what parents of T1 children must have to live with.

Sid, :)

It's people like you that brings hummer and sensible advice to this forum most days which I find very refreshing.

I must admit I new about Diabetes day, yet not sure whats the best thing to do to support it.

I would have thought DCUK could have come with some ideas for us in advance.

Actually you have highlighted a little problem which may get someone to get a gear into action to further advance ideas to increase the donations to the diabetes charities.

Roy. :)
“O, wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion.”

Thanks for your kind words Roy, BTW I have just taken the "Big Blue Test" over at http://www.bigbluetest.org/ the link kindly posted in phoenix's first post and while I know its an American charity at least I feel as if I have done something.

I tested, then for the exercise part of the test I walked down to my local chemist to pick up my prescription, I would normally drive there and although its not far its quite a walk for me  then tested again and if I read it correctly ACCU-CHEK® will pay $5 to the Diabetes Hands Foundation for every submitted entry, I also subscribed for their news letter in case that was a requirement.

It is a sad video that Phoenix posted but the children featured look extremely happy and healthy. WDD has been getting a mention in the last few issues of DUK's Balance magazine, not seen much mention in the press though.

what a brilliant vid....had me in tears.....at home at the mo with my daughter jane whose decided to start taking novamix in the morning again but las 2 days has hypos in the morning at school...when your bs has been 30....3 makes her just collapse...so kept her off school to monitor..scholl not unhappy of course but she feels unsafe there
getting back to diabetic day....next year im going to try with the diabetic nurse to do a fund raising at her school.. wear blue and bring in a £1 ....then we can have posters and info arond the school and canteen.just have to find out early the date for next year and the school to agree xx

You would need to be made of stone to not be affected after watching this video, all those beautiful children, its so unfair, isnt it?!
My little girl has 2 friends who are diabetic, they love staying over because they have low carb treats here, we make muffins and other goodies together.

No WDD awareness functions here, but a donation to a Diabetes charity is made every year. Its a ghastly, devious disease

Well done SId

It is a US charity (born out of a diabetes forum) half the proceeds are used in the US (details on the BBT site) the other half in Haiti, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. One of the US charities is also the US arm of Insulin for life which distributes unwanted insulin to people who need it worldwide. They are also involved in getting emergency supplies of insulin at times of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami.
(NB if anyone has any unused in date insulin or other unopened supplies; the IDDT is the UK representative of this charity)

Good idea, it's the same day every year 14th November, Frederick Banting's ('discoverer' of insulin) birthday.

I did see a lot about diabetes today on Daybreak, but I'm not sure if they mentioned that it was World Diabetes Day. They did give a decent amount of information on spotting the signs as well as showing how a parent was coping with her young diabetic daughter.

Not sure if you all know this as well, but monuments from all over the world get lit up on WDD! There's an album of STUNNING pictures here http://www.flickr.com/photos/idf/collec ... 313797168/ - I'm planning to add one of my own photographs to the 2012 collection tonight once it gets dark. Such an impressive visual reminder that diabetes affects so many people all over the world.

I had no idea it was world diabetes day. I guess there's been a lot going on, both on the board here and in the country in general, diabetes gets bumped down the list - not an exciting enough news story!

Hi All...

I sent all my levemir pens into IDDM and heard they all went to africa to be used
with the red cross for the little children .

It is heartbreaking to hear of this - but great to know any unused still in date insulins
can help others so much.

If anyone has any un-used - never to be used in date insulin .
My stock in my fridge was the results of I had changed type of insulin .
Just post to IDDM in a padded jiffy bag and they will be sent to where it is needed

Such a powerful gesture. I hope you're feeling proud that you have potentially saved a few lives

To be honest even though it was only 11 pens of levemir insulin .
Found myself wishing it was far more than just the 11 ...
To help 'MORE' children ...

A little donation can go far though
