Worried About My Husband

I was told a few weeks ago that I was on the borderline for Type2 and have been making many changes to my diet and exercise and also testing to see what foods do to my levels.

Over a month ago my husband, who had not been to the doctors for 18 years developed a horrible green thing on his finger. He went to see the doctor who dealt with that but as he had not been seen for so long gave him a thorough once over and sent him for a blood test. He went and has now had a letter from the surgery telling him to get another test, fasting glucose. He asked me what it meant and I told him that he may have had an abnormal fasting glucose level on his previous test which covered lipids, kidneys, liver etc. and they wanted to check it.

When I was checking my 1 hour post lunch level (I had a pilchard with salad and had not had pilchards before) with my meter I offered to test him too. He kept pulling away when I tried to prick his finger and I finally got a test done. The score was 27.4! He saw the look on my face and said show it me. I did and now he has gone off to be on his own. He knows that I am not happy if my levels are over 10 one hour after a meal. He has been dieting since earlier this year and is now around 94kg having lost quite a bit of his belly. He does not eat a good diet though and would like to eat only meat if he could since he dislikes most veg and will not touch salad except tomato. I think he is very, very scared. I am worried about him but think that with both of us in this together we can get through it together.

He is going for the test tomorrow before his doctors appointment about his infection which has been slow to clear and heal.

I fear bad news is coming his way.

yes with bloods that high it looks like hes a diabetic,
at least you know plenty to be able to advise him, if we can be of any help just ask :D

Hi,

I felt the same as your husband, my wife had nagged me to go to the docotrs as I looked ill, had lost weight and was peeing like a horse. I stuck my head in the sand, put it down to not drinking beer and working too much.

I eventually went, and it was confirmed my BS was 24.4. Now I am being treated I feel 300% better, yes the weight has crept back on, this is being worked on.

He will get used to it.

That sounds most certainly like diabetes, and whilst it's a shock it's not really the end of the world as so many on here can attest.

The good news for your husband is that he can now eat lots of meat, and cheese and sea food, and you can see if you can smuggle in some green vegetables as well...

All the best

Thanks everyone for your advice and support.

I think it was a good thing that I was told I was 'almost diabetic' and decided to follow the advice I had been reading here. It gives us a head start on what to expect. Even though I am not yet in the range to be classed as diabetic, merely insulin resistant, the doctor advised me to modify my lifestyle as if I was. I have and have lost half a stone in weight and have changed some of my eating habits over the last month. Tony has seen all of this so has some idea of the changes that need to be made. He has gone of to get his blood test this morning and has an appointment at the surgery where I am sure this will all be brought up.

We are going away on holiday next Wednesday so this is not a good thing to happen since we are off to Seattle and then on a cruise to Alaska. It will give us time to talk it through and hopefully he will have all of his appointments to go to when we get back although I dread his visit to the nurse. I also fear his food choices in the USA and on a ship with 24 hour food.

I will be interested to hear what he says when he gets home later this morning.

He is back from the doc. She refused to give him a steroid injection as he has uncontrolled diabetes so he is miffed that his shoulder will be left for a while.

The doc did not feel that the blood test he had this AM will tell them anything new. She says he has Type2 and they will control it with diet and tablets. He told her about yesterday afternoons test done by me and she said she was not surprised at all. He has an appointment on Tuesday with the doc who specialises in diabetes for her to decide upon the best course of treatment to start with. He has one of the emergency appointments due to us going away on Wednesday and has been told to notify the travel insurers.

I expect him to be prescribed Metformin next week. At the moment he seems very scared and we had a chat about food. He actually does not eat a high carb diet since he has an aversion to fruit and veg and tends to eat a lot of protein and fats. He does like sandwiches though. I need to sort him out on appropriate food choices and I think I can start this while we are on holiday but he hates being told what to do so I will have to be very careful and merely suggest. At least they have good fish and seafood in Seattle!
