My little boy is only four with type 1 do I need to worry about the reports in the papers today regarding kidney problems. How can I help him?

Asked by Sarah on Facebook during the 7pm-8pm live chat with Dr Hilary Jones. Got a question? Ask it here.

Help him become confident in testing his blood sugars and learning to inject. Explain to him the importance of good blood sugar control. People who develop chronic kidney failure are often those whose blood sugar has not been well controlled for many years. Regular checks will be essential but with good medical care and TLC from you which he is already getting it is not at all inevitable that his kidneys will be affected later in life.
