Hi

My wife has been diabetic for 2+ years

Currently doesnt need insulin controlled by diet

She is currently in Hospital as her blood sugar level was so high it didnt
register i think it was about 30

She has been extremley thirsty lost half a stone despite no change in diet
and eyesight has got blurred

Doctor told her to go straight to hospital and dont drive

Ive read a bit but there is so much to look at

What is safe level
What is dangerous level
How does it change eg does it shoot up at night or after meals


Any help or advice however small would be great

I am so sorry to read about your wife , what a worry for you and yes, it can be a minefield ! If her BG level was around 30, then it was very high indeed and no wonder she was poorly . The first thing she needs to address is medication and diet , does she take any meds at all and is her diabetes checked ? It is widely thought that all carbs can contribute to a high BG level and certainly, for me and many countless others, cutting right back on all forms of carbohydrates makes for good control . There is some great advice and info on this forum and website which you both need to read and heed , its good to know that you are taking an active part in helping your wife, she needs support, its a huge help .

She is not on any medication for diabetes ie no injections or insulin

Controlled by diet

Her levels went back down to about 13 yesterday afternoon but had creeped up again
to 18 last night

Her main complications were extreme thirst loss of weight ie half a stone in few weeks
Also her eyesight became blurred she has good eyesight but couldnt see a car plate
when we were walking which i could see with my glasses
There have been no changes to diet in last few weeks i can think off

Could it be caused by stress
 
Hi Dave - sorry to hear your wife is having such a rough time and you too :( - try not to worry too much. As you say your wife is diet controlled only she has a long way to go before she needs to consider insulin

I know your wife is not new to diabetes but Have you read the info for newly diagnosed diabetics on the intros page of the forum. It has a lot of useful information and can be helpful even to those who have been diabetic for a while - I have posted the link for you below

does your wife test regularly? - most GP's advise against this for T2 but taking regular reading to find out what different foods do to you is the key

You say your wifes diet hasn't changed but if you can give us some info on the type of things she eats in a typical day maybe someone here can see something that may help. Most of us find that reducing our carb intake helps a lot - hope your wife is soon on the mend and remember to look after yourself too!

This my sound like a silly question


Why would blood sugar levels suddenly double if no change in diet

She drinks coffee but with with no sugar just hermesetas

Normal food sensible diet started going gym sensible exercise

Would anything else cause it to go up so much

She isnt on insulin at the moment or tablets but may have to go on them soon
 
Sorry I don't know the answer to that question Dave so no it doesn't sound like a daft question -

What do you consider a sensible diet? - if she is following the NHS advice most of us find this isn't very helpful to diabetics - how much starchy carb does she eat - eg) potatoes, rice, bread - fruit is considered healthy but most diabetics find it raises our BS so only eat a small amount.

The more info you can tell us the better :D

Hwever she had gastric band fitted about 2 years ago so the amount of food she
can eat is quite small compared to a few years ago

She hasnt been keeping a food diary so cant be precise .

Does your blood level go up after eating and down a few hours later

What is a safe level of blood sugar ?
