I hope you get a meter - push hard for one. I don't know where I'd have been without the means to find out which foods affected me, in the early days. Now I don't need to test anywhere near as much, and usually manage to keep my BGs close to non-diabetic levels - my last HbA1c (the 3-month average test) was 5.2, which is very good! I'm Type 2.
You can use me as an example for your doctor, if you like. Also have a good read of the 'Questions to ask your doctor' - you'll have the link in the info Daisy1 originally posted. If you want to be pro-active with your diabetes and take control, you do need a meter.
Good luck!
