This morning me and the hubby visted '2' local xmas fayres .
Both had various stalls and craft things - hand and home made for sale...

What got me was ALL the " cupcake cakes, plonked in china cups/mugs, cupcake sweeties, cupcake biscuits and cupcake soaps and even handknitted cupcakes " Cupcake cards, cupcake wrapping paper, even cupcake keyrings too :o
There was at least 8 stalls of cupcakes sales - in each of the local school and church halls ...
They were and are now being crafted beyond a simple cupcake as in a baked cake then heavily decorated in
all sorts of shades of the pretty rainbow.

A man and his wife were even handing out free samples of these to taste - had to explain the obvious
It felt a bit over facing with SO MANY variations of a cupcake to sell and was uncomfortable having to smile
my way around through gritted teeth as cant eat/buy one and didnt even want one of these !

Apart from all these cupcake stalls - we did manage to find and buy a few lovely xmas gifts .
So all ended up well :D

I know what you mean Anna, cup cakes seem to be the in thing at the moment, they are everywhere. Even if I wasn't diabetic its not the sort of cake I would eat.

We went to another church fayre today and really enjoyed it. Some local school children were singing and a boy palyed along with his violin, so sweet and innocent  . The church is very old and quite impressive looking and my D said she it smelt of church, I know what she means, but it was a lovely fayre and very welcoming and friendly. We are going to a church jumble sale next Saturday, now thats a word I haven't heard of in a long time, again looking forward to it. I have lost count on how manyfayres we have been to now, I did get a bottle of Australian wine and a bottle of mineral water in the bottle tombolia, but as I dont drink alcohol, it will be a present for someone :D

The cupcakes look overtly sickly sweet so I wouldnt want one even if I wasnt diabetic
Your right RRB - they are EVERYWHERE and in so many differing forms and creations .
Sniffed at the soap styled ones - only because I knew they were 'not' for eating ! :P

The amount of sugar that must be in one of them is a frightening thought

We picked up a leaflet for another xmas fayre on this thursday evening - so we will pop out to this one .
[it has mulled wine here  ] Will just have 'the one!' .

Am not as lucky as RRB , did a raffle and didnt win a thing , still its fun to just have a go .
There is a band on thurs night so with mulled wine and chrissy carols it should be quite merry and cheery ...

Cupcakes are disgusting - me being a curious diabetic decided to see what all the fuss was about and tried one. I quickly came to the conclusion that it was just another fad and one that I would not be joining in with. Most of the cake ended up in the bin as it was far, far too sweet for me.

I very occasionally make butterfly cakes - small cakes with a tiny amount of butter cream in. I reduce the sugar and use light sunflower spread in them and they make a special treat for us.

Cupcakes seem to be the latest way of filling everyone with loads of sugar -as if there isn't enough sweet stuff about.

I havent ' DARED ' to even try one of these as they look so sickly sweeeeet :problem:

Was happier sniffing the soap ones - as no one can ask or expect you to eat one of these :P

I do worry for the youngsters as they will be crammed fulll of sugar after eating one of these .
So 'not' good - no matter how pretty one of these may look

Man and his wife didn't know what to do or say when I had to explain the obvious and showed them
my diabetic bracelet .
He kept shoving a basket of these to sample free at me - I was so  embarrassed .
Then it was followed with the awkward silence after explaining the obvious even more

I do try to avoid these stalls - trouble is there are so 'many' of them

We have faced the same problem at craft fayre's, people just don't take no for an answer. I'll happily try the cheese and savoury samples and can be tempted by diabetic products but refusal of sweet things is met with a look of disapproval. The cupcake sampled was a one off, never to be repeated experience.

Yes youngsters are being crammed full of sweet stuff and watching them bounce off walls in restaurants is not funny. It often spoils what could be an enjoyable meal for us. If only parents they knew the damage it was doing to their kids, they might stop and think twice before allowing them these sort of things.

Been chatting about Christmas today and the one thing we have noticed is that savoury things are not promoted as much as the sweet things. Supermarkets are quick to offer samples of sweet stuff but savouries are a rarity.

Hi,

Thought I would add my two pennies worth. I agree, it is so frustrating, but I now try not to see my diabetes as something that controls what I can and can't eat, I see it more that I make different choices about what I put in my mouth. I get sick of having to explain myself, so now, I don't. I just say "I don't really do sweet things, but thank you" if they still persist "I'm sweet enough already, thank you". I just don't understand why people can't let others choose, without having to explain . What if you are allergic to gluten or dairy etc? What if you just don't like the taste of sweet things? People are allowed not to eat meat with the simple explanation "I'm vegetarian". I've gotten bored of trying to explain diabetes, especially to people who say "surely you can have just one". But what if I DON'T WANT ONE! There, rant over with.

Sorry, but life is about choices and trying not to make the same mistakes twice. Sweets are not the be all and end all!

On the plus side, the other day tesco were doing a free sample van with olives, cheese etc and asda free cups of lentil soup! Yum!
