Yet another newbie!

Hi there, I was diagnosed withType2 just before Christmas {thanks for that Santa, lol } with a fasting B.S of 18.7,which made my G.P. flinch! With a new diet and 2000mgs daily of metformin I have had two HbA1c tests, the first measuring 7.8, and the second this week being 7.3. My main concern is that my morning fasting B.S. can be anything from 8.9 to this morning's dizzy height of 11.3! Being an insomniac I do commit the unforgiveable sin of midnight snacking, but as I eat the same thing each night I don't understand the difference in B.S. figures. Any help and advice will be appreciated! {my G.P already got in first with don't snack!}
 
Well sleep deprivation is linked closely to high BG levels, maybe you need to address this issue before anything else (i'm sure you have tried lots though). Your Hb1s are going the right way, so a few tweaks and I'm sure you'll get there.
 
I had sleep apnea for years which I think contributed to my diabetes. Within two weeks of dropping carbs the sleep apnea had gone! My last hb1ac was 5.3 without any meds. It can be done!
 
Really trying to cut my carbs by as much as possible, The first few months after diagnosis were a NIGHTMARE as I slavishly followed the diabetic nurses advice on carbing. :evil: It wasn't till I found this site and really started reading the posts that I began to gain control. There is so much still to learn but as you say, it CAN be done! :D How did you overcome your problem with sleep apnae,was it as simple as dropping the carbs, or was there medical intervention?
 
I was waiting to see the specialist, but I didn't need it. Literally within two weeks of dropping carbs my apnea had gone! It was crazy cos I had hardly lost any weight at that point. I've been sleeping soundly ever since. The only time it comes back is the odd occasion I fall off the wagon!
 
Last night restricted my illicit snacks to two oatcakes and a chunk of half fat cheddar, slept like a log, and woke to a BS of 8.3, best ever!!! My eternal gratitude for pointing me in what seems to be the right direction. :D :D You can't stay on the wagon forever, there must be some little pleasures in life! :wink:
 
I'm sure my appaling sleeping patterns add to my problems. I don't always sleep well and haave not done so for several years - my sleeping patterns are related to unacceptable levels of stress :?

Add to that the stress hormone cortisol... :(

Anyway, welcome. The advice is great here, isn't it. It has helped me to turn things around :D

Doczoc - were you a snorer too? If you were, did that stop once you cut the carbs?
 
Hi spiral, I usually get about 3 hours a night before either my bladder,or pain wakes me up, but last night following Doczoc's advice I got an amazing 5 hours! :D :D What a difference that makes. I do feel for you, I have never suffered from stress, in fact I can be so laid back I don't do myself any favours, as I just accepted the diabetes symptoms as another little annoyance! It must be exhausting to be forever on edge. :cry: I don't know if I snore, but last night I didn't dribble! How elegant old age is, lol. :oops: :oops:
