You guys were right...met the diabetic nurse!

The rules have changed. If you're in the system then any new requirements will show up at your next medical. Basically the process has been changed because diabetes controlled by insulin or drugs that increase your chance of a hypo no longer disqualifies you from having a medical. However, the rules that determine if you can hold the medical now apply to all diabetics. Although the monitoring of blood sugar isn't requires If your diet only or on metformin.

However at each medical exam you now need to do a stress Ecg. Whether for a class one or class two medical. Which is about £600 a go. I think that is an annual requirement and may be every six months passed a certain age too.

Its great that a type 1 can now fly for a living, but the change in rules seems to have had an undesired consequence. Sometimes the caa fixes stuff. Sometimes if doesn't!
 

If you have an nppl or one of the new national licenses then the requirements are based on the dvla rather than easa
 
I thought you had to have an ECG anyway and it wasn't anything g to do with being diabetic or not!

It's initially and then not for sometime after. Maybe you're first medical after you are 50? It could even be 40. My last medical was before my 40th. Also it's a stress Ecg not a normal one. So you have to run fast on a treadmill first! It's all about the link between copd and diabetes and your likelihood off having a heart attack mid air!

The requirement has always been there. But only if you had 10% risk of a heart attack in 10 years. That sentence has been taken out of the requirements

Leaving aside the offensive word you used to describe anyone taking an annuity (which, incidentally I am surprised has been left in by whoever moderated and edited the post before I saw it), I do not know enough about annuities to comment on that point.

I have, however, heard of people who claim to have a debilitating, life limiting medical condition in order to claim early payment of enhanced pensions.

Thanks Mike, its actually after the age of 40, but its nothing to do with being a diabetic, everyone has to have one. To the best of my knowledge for class one the medical with ECG costs under £300 but again that's for anyone. As you are a well controlled by diet type two, Im sure you haven't got anything to worry about in regards to you diabetes and flying, and it shouldn't cost you any more for your license than anyone else. Sue x
 


Buts that's a standard Ecg not a stress Ecg. And checking the caa website it's your first medical after 40 then no more until 50 then every 24 months. More.frequent for a class one. I can send a link tonight if you want.

That's for a normal (non stress) Ecg for non diabetics.

For diabetics it's an annual review with a caa diabetic specialist (unlike your gp will know it all!) annual Hba1c and ab exercise Ecg which is annual. Also an the medical is to be issued annually Not every 2 years as it should be for those between 40-50.

So definitly more expensive. But money well spent and knowing the caa access to top quality specialists

You don't claim to have a debilitating, Life limiting medical condition in order to claim early payment of enhanced pension? I don't know. But I could investigate for a consultancy fee.

You don't claim anything. The form will say something like "do you have type 2 diabetes?" are suggesting I lie and say no?

And I'm under no illusion about how lucky I am at moment. Im just uncertain as to why that means my story and opinion holds less weight than anyone else's!
 
I'm thinking maybe the thread has run its natural course, there have been some interesting discussions here though lol

I think you'll find it's the delivery style, and place you've chosen to make it into an argument, rather than the content that's at issue. I think out of respect to the OP, if you really want to continue this, start your own thread to discuss the merits of various dietary approaches.
 

I take your point. But I haven't talked about the merits of one diet over another! All I've said in terms of diet is whatever works! The delivery style is fine. The message seems to create problems. But they're not my problems. Again you do whatever works.
