(this is a bit rant-y, TW brief mention of eating disorder and unhelpful doctors)
Hello,
I was diagnosed with insulin resistance/prediabetes afew years ago and frankly I'm confused as to what caused it and was wondering if anyone would have any insight.
Backstory: I've had symptoms of insulin resistance since I was a kid (like 10) but was diagnosed when I was 16. Initially pcos was suspected but after many bloodtests and 5 ultrasounds since I was 13 they finally gave up on that theory and i was sent to a specialist who ran many tests and concluded insulin resistance was to blame. I was put on metformin to prevent it from progressing into diabetes and was told under my circumstances, its just a matter of time before it would progress if left alone so it would be advisable to stay on the medication for the rest of my life unless the insulin resistance was reversed (but idk what caused it
). I'm a 20yo female, healthy weight, waist measurement well under the 34" guideline, I excerise (pole fitness, pilates, yoga), I've been vegan for 8 years (and eat healthy) and have been to multiple dieticians who were happy with my diet and lifestyle. I'm frustrated because doctors in the same senctance will say 'you're a healthy weight' but 'ehhh just lose weight that would help', while Dieticians tell me not to lose weight and not to change anything because it would be 'trying to fix something that's not broken'. I have a family history of type 2 diebetes and Alzheimer's. I'm struggling because I don't know why I have prediabetes and doctors seem to just suggest I did it to myself and that I should just exercise even more and under-eat. Its very triggering considering my eating disorder past. Does anyone have any science around the cause for insulin resistance in seemingly healthy individuals or any suggestions of something I might be missing that caused it and is causing it to persist now?
