The Westbrook's Crystal Palace stout turned up this afternoon. It's not done up in Crystal Palace colours, though (pic below).
I thought I'd better sample it and report. The Czechs have a proverb about being able to tell a good beer from just one sip - but it's better to make sure. So with some roast chicken and cauli-broccoli cheese, it was tested.
It's a decent stout. Thinner than most stouts but nice and malty, maybe porter-ish? There are Czech "black lagers" that taste similar. Probably most like a bottled Guinness or Red Heart, which would fit being made with unmalted barley, which is what makes most Irish stouts "dry". I'm not familiar with any other "Dry London" stouts so nothing to compare it with there. There's a bit of blether on the can about "chimney smoke" flavour which I've just ignored.
So- definitely drinkable, and given I've usually missed out completely on dark beers for the last five years, a very nice addition. 4.9% abv and 3g carb in 440ml.
I've had a second while typing this. I think it works.
Lemme guess what you'll be drinking.Hmmm...everything on the list above is sold out, apart from the stout....
Off to google "Lowecal lager"
Yes, I saw that. Let's hope it's due to high demand for healthier beer rather than 'not worth brewing it because it's not selling'.Hmmm...everything on the list above is sold out, apart from the stout....
As I understand although Westbrooks is based near Leeds, they are having the brewing done in Norfolk (?) and supply is therefore not constant.Yes, I saw that. Let's hope it's due to high demand for healthier beer rather than 'not worth brewing it because it's not selling'.
