I would like to ask if there is any member out there that has had a cataract removed and being blind in one eye. I am nervous about doing it but my eyesight has got more fuzzy recently and I do not think I can put off having the cataract removed for much longer.
I am a well controlled Type 1 diagnosed in 1960. Lost my sight in my right eye in 1980 due to a detached retina. I am interested in knowing if one has any sight immediately after the surgery as I do not have a pump but use insulin pens and test my blood sugar many times a day but with a meter and test strips.
I am worried about how I am going to cope if I am unable to see anything after the surgery.
I also have a corneal abrasion on the side of my "good" eye that does not obstruct vision but does water considerably at times when waking up from sleep as my eye is very dry despite using drops and ointment. I have had this for many years and it flares up now and again but I do not know what happens to this if one has cataract surgery. Would welcome any member's experience of anything similar.

Hi

Not had the issues you mention, but do have an issue with my left eye that requires an operation to save the deterioration in its vision.

So I know how precious sight becomes.

Just wanted to reach out so you knew your post was heard.

Hopefully others will chime in with the information to help you.

Best of luck.

I am going in for cataract surgery March 6th. I didn't know I had cataracts until I went to see the eye specialist for my Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy. The Fuchs means I need corneal transplants in both eyes. My vision is poor and I am unable to drive at night or in low light. I have to have my cataracts done first before the transplants. This will make my Fuchs worse. The surgeon told me that my vision will be great almost immediately after my cataract surgery, but will get worsen over the following couple of days, but will then will normalise. Ancient Lady, is there anyone who can help you for those few days after surgery? I totally understand your fear as you have only one seeing eye. Are you able to get a cgm as that will make life easier during your post operation?. Wishing you the very best.

After a cataract operation you will be able to see out of that eye, but sight could be a bit blurred for a day or two. You will need reading glasses, as the new lens will most likely be for distance only. You will be given two types of drops to use, antibiotic drops and anti-inflammatory drops.
I was unfortunate, as I developed macular oedema about 6 weeks after the op. This caused blurred central vision which was treated with steroid drops. So, if you get blurred vision a month or two after the op, see your optician who will refer you to an ophthalmologist. Don't be like me and wait days to see if it improves, just phone your optician. . . . Not that it will happen to you!!
The operation itself was no problem, I didn't feel a thing.

Mountain out of mole hill makers ,queues , crowds , shopping on a Saturday hmm just shopping I guess no matter what day it is
I had both my eyes done , I could see fine virtually immediately , I use to wear glasses constantly for distance , now no glasses do need them for reading though,
