Here's some motivation. Running keeps you young (or at least it does mice)
Take some mice that are bred to age quickly because of lots of mutant mitochondria.
Divide them into two groups.
Mice defective DNA polymerase mtDNA aging 1.JPG

And then look at the results, both mice are the same age. One sleek with good muscle tone, the other is an old mouse, grey haired and feeble.

Pheonix that has had me in stitches. Who decided to do a study like that?!?

I'll think of that while I battle my run tonight!

Endurance exercise rescues progeroid aging and induces systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation in mtDNA mutator mice

HELP! Please

As you know l have a thing against shoes but am trying to get used to these running ones. I decided the toe was to sore on the bare x 200 and so ordered the next size up. Come summer l am back to barefeet it is just for cold weather.

These are loads better but one of my feet when measured was a bit broader than the other now it is a bit tight across the top. Not a lot it is at the base of the laces holder on l guess the broad bit of foot half way along just before my toes (sorry not know name of area)

The original size 5 l touched the end and one toe was buckling in so as l wore them and couldn't send them back, l bit the bullet and bought another 5.5 pair.
Do l just get used to it or go up to a size 6. Which may be a bit big for me lengthwise based on this size but will l know not be tight across the top. At the moment my toes have about 1/4 cm to the end of the shoe. Don't want to wear them outside in case l change them in the next few days.

Driving other half mad trying to run inside the house to see how the shoe feel when running.

I sent the grips back for a 5.5 they had no probs other than a bit overall side tight... length was fine. Am worried the 5.5 l get back may be to big lengthways (there was still room in the 5s till end of the shoe) but fine sideways

l swear l hate shoes!

If I'm going to be using shoes on serious off road stuff, or for endurance events, I always go a bit bigger, maybe a half size so instead of euro 42 go for a 42.5. This gives an allowance for a bit of movement of the foot when going downhill and swelling on the longer events.

I forgot to add l have tracked down a coach. he is a senior coach at a localish Harrier group. Told him my history and plans and when he finished chuckling told me l don't believe in doing things easy.
I am in for hell on Tuesday l see our PT at 07:50 then work then from work to harriers for about 1.5hrs direct from work. Steve said he will put me on the track check me out then will sort out a basic plan for me till May to do a build up. Then he gets stuck into my training in the 3 months left.
I am just hoping it can work out as l will soon be going back to locum proper side and that means driving round the country for work wherever it is and only home at weekends.

We all have ****** runs now and then, how we deal with them is what makes us better runnrs, and better runners are better people;)

Take a look back and see if there's anything in the day or couple of days before that may have contributed, less sleep, underhydrated, meal times or contents, any stressors, changed soemthing else in the rest of your training - all have an effect.

Personally, I had a good run on Sunday, rest day Monday, ran Tuesday, it was horrible. HR was OK, but the legs were not playing ball. This blooming weather's not helping at the moment either.

Ok so went to the training run on Tuesday had zero energy left after kayaking Sunday and Ste Tuesday morning. l walked onto the training track muttered oh holy hell n c*** and wanted to do a U turn.
There was lots of clones of ElyDave and Mike J (A vet l know he runs to work 12 miles every day not inc racing etc) These thin muscled clones were hurtling round the track legs thin and muscled and not a gasp from their lungs. My stumpy legs got an instant inferiority complex. o_O
Steve was great apart from the fact he had me stagger round the 400 mtr track 3 times. I walked a total of about 140 mts so have to say given that was the most l have run since Jr school and how unfit l felt l was pleased with and apart from a bit stiff in the groin and knees slightly sore l have felt fine an even bigger shock.

My homework is now simple. No more running until at earliest end of March. i have to walk 1.5hrs every other day. He says most folks walk a mile in 20 mins l need to aim for a mile in 30 min start point. He wants me to get used to being on my feet walking and carrying my weight, l have to admit l hate walking it is so slow, so this will be a challenge. He says in my race we will walk a lot as obstacles will stow us down so don't go nuts about the running part.
Weekdays l will do road walking as will be very early morning or late evening and weekends will be off onto cross country.
If l do start to run at end of March and l feel comfy l am to work it into the walking and not stop at the end of the run for breath but keep walking. Come May then l can get into the running side properly. I can contact him anytime, to go back in about 2 or 3 weeks with progress report.

Excellent stuff. It's always a good idea to get specialist advice from someone who can see and talk to you. All we can do here is give general advice.

Sounds like you're doing well. I'm thinking a coach s needed for my next evolution in running.

The club l have loosely joined are actually fell runners just do track training. The advice from here has been great don't knock it. Yes one on one is always preferable however good advice is good no matter from where. They have an excellent section on their site (side links) for info for especially beginners on health and running advice.
I do need to sort my eating and drinking out l think l will take my protein drink out on walks and also some sort of snack, should have learnt from the kayak on Sunday but wasn't thinking of for me so much exertion in so short a time.

Where is your direction of running taking you?

That's the key question.

This year I'll be racing at anything from 5k to 40 miles. I would like to get some lactate testing done, and get with a coach to talk about where my (limited) talents woudl eb best directed. I've a feeling that some more specificity and focus woudl bring better results. In terms of enjoyment I prefer the fell running and HM to 20 miler distance, but not too many hills around here.

This might be of interest to those living down south, a nice dead flat sea level run along the beach, in support of Folkestone air show (itself a fantastic free event).

@hale I was doing the run/walk system. I can now run a mile without stopping. I too find it hard but am enjoying the end results, I've gone down 2 jeans sizes since I started. We'll all get there at our own pace :D:D:D:D:D
