Hello all,

I have had Type 2 Diabetes for 22 years and for many of those I have existed on a low fat, high carbohydrate diet - probably making everything worse by eating more weetabix and bread when hungry. I feel cross and cheated that new research is showing that I have not been helping myself all along, even though I thought I was eating healthily (if you ignore the cakes, biscuits and chocolate which I ate on top of the healthy food).

No longer wishing to be complacent, and definitely with a view to decreasing my blood sugar readings and weight, and stabilising or reducing my medication; I have switched to Mediterranean moderate fat, low starchy carbohyrates. My head can't cope with the thought of 800 calories, so I have just switched the diet at the moment. Now on day 8 and I have lost 6lb. Never before!! Great motivation. Not being a Type 1, I have never learned about carbohydrate measuring, and the different types of carbohydrate; only calories and fat percentages. Whole new learning curve coming on........................................

Hello @Yai and welcome to the forum. I'm tagging @daisy1 who will be along shortly with some great information for you. I too was diabetic for a long time (9.5 years) before I found this forum, I was eating low fat and high carb too. I no longer take medication for my diabetes, after switching to a low carbohydrate diet I can control my blood glucose with diet alone. Good luck with your change in diet, you've made a great start I think.

Thank you for your encouragement. To be honest, I only found this site through searching for low carb-high fat links, and for making a guess at Diabetes UK website! I have recently moved and therefore only met the Diabetes team at my new practice last week. They didn't comment on my request for support in changing my diet and reviewing medication, but were generally encouraging, and agreed to an appointment and repeat blood test after 3 months instead of 6. So, onwards and upwards (or downwards in the case of sugar reading and weight hopefully).

Hi and welcome!

Have you discovered the best bit yet? That everything tastes nicer on low carb. :D (sometimes that can take a few weeks to kick in, but it is worth the wait)

Well yes. We find (because I have roped my husband in too), that recipes are generally more filling and, since we are not snacking between meals, we take time to savour the food put in front of us! I have always liked this type of food, but have equally always liked baking and being led astray by desserts!

Thank you everyone who is offereing support. Can anyone tell me how to "follow" a member? Useless at social media!

If you open Brunneria's profile page, at the top right corner you will see, in fairly small writing the word "Follow". Now, if I'm totally honest, I don't know what then happens as I have never followed anyone. Maybe someone can tell us both what happens when you Follow someone.

Oh, and very well done for deciding to wrangle your diabetes into a good place. I'm sure you won't regret it.

@Yai

Hello Yai and welcome to the Forum :) Here, as mentioned above, is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask as many questions as you want and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 147,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Hello Yai,
I was in a similar position. Diagnosed about 15 years ago, and thought it was all about just avoiding sugar. I haven't done so badly over the years, mainly by keeping portions small (e.g I would have just one profiterole, one scoop of ice cream etc.) Surgery insisted I shouldn't test, and eventually I was put on 1500mg metformin. Weight was not a major issue.
In the last few months I discovered this wonderful forum, started testing (self funded) and begun to change my diet. Lchf seems to suit me. Lots of salad and vegetables, nuts as snacks etc. Blood sugars are reducing, my weight has dropped a bit, and I feel better - more energy and my knees feel better.
What I'm trying to say is that you can make a difference. It's not too late. Keep well!

Hello @Yai

We are in very similar situations - I have also just started low carb rather than following official advice of low fat + carbs with every meal.

I am just awaiting delivery of a meter as I want to do this scientifically and find out what suits me best.

Hope you get on well with your new eating :)

I've been diagnosed 19 years now - and whatever dietary advice I've had from nurses, dietitians etc has veered towards low fat, make sure you eat a "healthy balanced diet".

I'm so glad I found the keto diet 7 months ago. My HbA1C was 62, and the nurse wanted to increase my metformin. I said I'd just changed my diet and was losing weight, so I was given 3 months to try. Next HbA1C was 40. I'm down 4 stone over the 7 months. I had lunch in a cafe today: flax seed bread (I checked ingredients) with mashed avo, cheese and bacon. BG rose from 5.2 before to.... err.... well actually, it didn't rise. I'm wearing a Freestyle Libre sensor, have scanned a zillion times, and my BG is still below what it was before I ate.

Next time I see the nurse, I intend to tell them straight what I'm doing - they will be able to,see the difference it's made. I think they should recommend it to all people with diabetes. They won't prescribe me test strips, but sod 'em. I am taking control.

You've hit the nail on the head with this one, @Brunneria , as you so very often do!

I'm going to attempt a low-carb toad-in-the-hole tonight! Normally I do sausages with a massive low carb cauliflower cheese - but today I'm going to whizz very soft cauli with eggs and mustard, and use that as the 'hole' around the toads.

Without this forum I would still be eating high carb and getting cross every time I test post-food. Those days are GONE.

Will report back on the toad......

Love Snapsy

I'm also very thankful I've switched to low carb as I was really tearing my hair out with official dietary advice. I was feeling progressively more and more awful with it! I do still need to get my Hba1c lower, but that is slowly happening and current levels suggest it's very likely to be lower next time after a year of stability.

I am currently going through a patch where I seem able to tolerate a few more carbs than I have been able to in recent times. (Still under 80g though I am going back to under 40g once I'm back at work and not staying with friends who find this tricky. There was a certain amount of awe at how much salad I was happy to eat last night...) but I am aware this can change quickly, so I keep testing regularly especially after unfamiliar food or more than usual carbs.
