Type of diabetes
Type 2
A couple of weeks ago I was diagnosed with T2D, the doctor gave me a script for Metformin because my mobility is so poor that diet alone is unlikely to reverse the syptoms significantly and the advice to eat more complex carbs in my diet, things like when having a jacket spud to eat it more wholly rather than mash up the potato before eating, eat more oats, wholemeal etc. I was also given a phone number to ring for the DESMOND day course where we would learn more about what to eat and warned that there was a massive waiting list for said course. I have a young family to feed and so want to buy stuff that we can all eat together rather than doing different dishes for me. Today in the shop I was faced with two types of rice but with different info and wonder if I post up the nutritional info here whether someone would help me work out which I should buy or which is best and why please?

I would go for the higher fibre and protein one and watch the portion size. Make up for less carbs with more vegetables and lean meat. hope this helps. Try a company called Nairns for brilliant Oat based foods they have transformed my eating.

Personally I recommend you read as much as you possibly can on this forum. A lot of us follow a low carb high fat diet which we find really helps with keeping Blood Glucose lower and try to avoid eating carbs wherever possible. This may or may not work for you but it seems to work for lots of people here, Your doctor has given the NICE guideline advice which some/most of us choose to ignore as we find it simply doesn't work. If you can try and get yourself a blood glucose meter to check what foods make your sugars spike and try to avoid these. There are lots of people here who have had many years of experience in relieving their diabetes symptoms. Its worth listening to what they have to say.
Good luck in your journey.

And in answer to your original question, in my humble opinion rice is something you should try to avoid eating.

Hi just had a look at Nairns site, the carbs frighten me,I couldn't manage something between 4&6gms carbs per biscuit and only small biscuits my wife loves them but then she's not diabetic

Thanks for that bulkbiker I have a blood sugar monitor on the way and plan to use it to help me determine what food does what when it comes, I am just soo confused by it all, things that are supposed to make me feel ok make me feel ill and vice versa. Where do I find info on the low carb high fat diet please?

I reversed my diabetes by diet only , I used the low carb diet ,no potatoes, rice or pasta and cut down on bread, it does seem very hard for follow and will take time , I eat more leeks celery, courgettes. Peppers.tomatoes broccoli. Colliflower.spinach. etc but no root veg ,meats.chicken.bacon beef.pork etc high meat content sausages..bacon egg and mushrooms fried in butter for breakfast not to bad is it.but no porrage .muesli, if peckish pork scratchings or bit of cheese or tescos cheap peanut butter on crispbread. as you test you will find what foods spike your BG and then leave out
