I was in same place, 40+ a day, more than 25 years in the saddle, etc. Unfortunately I got T2D first, but was a 9 stone weakling and thin as a rake. Then i had 2 heart attacks in the same month, so decided that was a good time to stop. I did it by (a) Alan Carr book (b) NRT patches, but they had to be the right one, One popular brand burnt my skin and itched like crazy, and did not give me the right hit. But there was a Boots brand that was just right, and I found it easy ro give up then (3) Cold Turkey. I stopped as per Alan Carr, and have not smoked a single fag since (5 years ago). My wife still smokes like a trooper, but I find it easy to ignore it.Hi Ally,
In my opinion the important thing is to stop smoking and this is something you have suggested you want to do. It will do wonders for your health even if it might set back your diabetes in the short term.
I was a really heavy smoker from the age of 11 until I packed in last year after 40 years of smoking. I was smoking 40+ cigarettes a day. My breathing is much improved and I do not cough as much as I used to. I used patches to help me stop. Also, I read the book by Alan Carr "Easy way to stop smoking" I found this book really helpful.
I did gain some weight but as my diagnosis with diabetes was 3 months after I stopped smoking, it is difficult to know the cause of the weight gain. I like to blame it on the meds!!
I can honestly say that the best thing you can do for your health is to quit the fags for good. Please get in touch if you feel I could support you with this.

I did try giving up by reducing it gradually, by leaving my smoking kit behind or in another room, by forcing myself to only smoke outside, never in the house. i tried most NRT products. The gum and tabs gave me hiccups. All fell by the wayside.Amazing how we're all different. I've not smoked for just 6 months, but I can't stand the smell anymore. To live with a partner still puffing away would drive me nuts..............
Congratulations Ally1 I have never smoked but from experience of family and friends it's very hard to give up smoking, you will have good days and bad, but don't feel guilty. Just try again the following day.I have bought a vype epen and used that for 4 days and am cutting down from 40 aday ro around 7 aday
doing ok thank you. Have, t had a smoke so far today and trying my best to get my eating under controlledHow are you @ally1? I hope you're having a good weekend.
That's brilliant. I used to smoke and I know how addictive it is. I gave up cold turkey the day i found out I was pregnant, which is 20 years ago. It probably took me 6 years before the cravings went away, and I'm sure I'd have given in if it wasn't for the children.doing ok thank you. thank you for caring. I realise I have many friends here. It was more like two packet of biscuits. Lol xxThat's brilliant. I used to smoke and I know how addictive it is. Try not to throw the towel in if you feel you've slipped up. I know it's tempting to think "Well, now I've had two biscuits I've blown it and might as well eat the packet" but that's not helpful (believe me, I have been there). Instead, I think "ok, today's not been great but its better than I was doing xx weeks ago, and I'll make more of an effort tomortow". I really hope that doesn't sound patronising, I just know that for me, trying to find the positive in a slip up means I'm less likely to slip further.
Lots of people on here are very supportive. I hope you have similar support in real life.
There is a mechanism to change a vote if you wish. only the person voting can change itHi So sorry Too ManyCrisps pressed the funny icon instead of the friendly one

Fill yourself up with half a pan of veggies. Any til your sugar cravings leave you alone. Keep full and biscuits wont be able to satisfy you. Fill up on protein. Cheese, chicken anything that's handy or microwave friendly. Keep yourself full til sugar hits bu**er off. Don't let them a space in your life. Don't buy them.thank you for caring. I realise I have many friends here. It was more like two packet of biscuits. Lol xx
