And again, cakes have been made well before diabetes and obesity

The ancient Egyptians used to test for diabetes by seeing if ants where attracted to a persons urine.

Diabetes has been with us a long long time.

Beats the GTT test, eh?

Actually Aspartame was developed for the exact same reason - ant poison.
EDIT: could this be a secret weapon to sabotage the cake/sweet stall in the OP?

By a long shot and at least they were not daft enough to taste for sweetness them selves

Messes up the theory it's a new epidemic then?

That's
I know that some people will say that they are just trying to raise money and if that's the easiest/best way of raising money then they should just do that. But it doesn't sit well with me. I think it risks damaging the reputation of the charity. We are constantly being told that being overweight and eating sugary junky **** raises your risk of getting diabetes. Plus, any diabetics who would like to support Diabetes UK may exclude themselves from donating in this way as they won't be able to enjoy the prize! (I know a little choc is ok but who'd have the willpower to resist a big hamper of chocs in their house? I wouldn't!) So there must be lots of diabetics in tesco who see it and walk by.
But for me it's more about the message - let's raise money for a condition that is partly diet related (not wholly, but partly) by selling a big hamper of sugary food or a load of cakes.

It's not even like I see them with a raffle for anything else - they could easily do, say a hamper of toiletries, or smelly candles, or just a general tombola-thing with a number of items, possibly a few food related. But it's always sweets and cakes .Why? In my local tesco I heard a customer laughing at the DUK table and saying 'this is hilarious, love it!' It's turning diabetes into a joke with the local population many of whom will only become aware of DUK through their ridiculous tables in tesco.

Does anyone else think its...rather inappropriate?
just like encouraging diabetics to eat sugary stuff isn't it,

Not wishing to go off on a tangent but when I think about it, it occurs to me the ancient Egyptians ate a lot of carbohydrates mainly bread from wheat and drank a lot of bear but did not eat great quantities of meat or fat, and also many where quite portly. Not so different from us.

Again, ruins the idea about farming being modern though.
Bread, and grain seems to date back to neanderthal man.
Then again, fattened ox seems to be a staple with egyptians.?

History seems to be suggesting nothing has changed for a few millenium?

(I'm not entirely sure on the different bit, it may depend on which side on the pyramid you where on, either destined to be in it, or outside building it.)

Probably have poor old H G Wells turning in his grave I wouldn't doubt.

It may well be inappropriate but sadly lucrative there must be alternatives.

Mind you my daughter returned home earlier after taking a group of girl guides on a day trip to Cadburys they all came back with a ton of chocolate and high on sugar it's what they go for unfortunately.

It's a myth the Egyptians actually ate a surprisingly small amount of meat or fish a recent study analysed some mummies at the molecular level and found their staple diet to be mainly vegetarian with a lot of grain and wheat as the largest part of their diet.

Any way will desist from this as its messing things up.

Fatted calf was popular with Esau's family according to some classic textbook.

Certainly messes up the hunter/gatherer from time gone by theory.
More ties mankind into the gatherer type.

Makes a mess of the theory behind Paleo diet, but does not invalidate the diet itself, just its purported origins.

So what is it about a cake /sweet stall that has become so toxic so suddenly? The WI have been manning (?) cake stalls and making and selling cakes and confectionary since the year dot. Why do we need Paleo all of a sudden? Why are we now condemning DUK and Tesco for doing this?

What has changed to make the rate of increase of diabetes such a headline grabber? Why are we more sensitive to carbs that we have to switch off our 'normal' glycogen based metabolism, and force our bodies into ketogenic mode, which is usually the reserve tank? Whilst it seems to work, it is a workaround, not a fix. We were not designed to run our bodies like this.

I don't believe that dodgy pancreases (or pancreata, depending how you like to express it) are new phenomena or necessarily diet related, so could we please keep things on track here chaps?

Grain, as a category of food, may date back to neanderthal man, but grain today has changed tremendously from that grown even 100 years ago!

Back on track. I don't think it is appropriate, but it is necessary,so I for one will not be complaining to DUK.
