Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Hi there,
I posted yesterday about a fasting glucose test I have on Monday, Dr and me both suspect diabetes, but I've been feeling really rotten last few days and it's getting worse...GP has got me to do a diary of my symptoms.
However, I'm wondering why I keep feeling awful after eating, for example I had soup, whole meal roll, fruit and yoghurt for lunch yet 15-20mins after I'm on the sofa feeling very strange..it's hard to describe, like my head is heavy, my stomach is heavy and I feel a bit like I've got flu...would this be something common in diabetics? I know I should wait until I know what's up for sure, but just curious. Also I have headaches and shakiness every morning.
Thank you :)

Hi,

It sounds to me like high blood sugars, pushed up no doubt by your soup (was it tinned?), bread roll and fruit (and possibly also the yogurt - check the carb content on the tub) I could be quite wrong, but that was a very carb laden lunch I'm afraid and I expect I might feel similar to you had I eaten it.

In addition to a diary of your symptoms, I would add notes about what you ate prior to feeling those symptoms, and show this to your doctor..

Hi Bluetit,

I've been trying to cut right down on carbs, especially bread as it has been making me feel nauseous at times so try and keep it to a minimum, I've never thought about carbs in yogurts, always just associate them with dairy.
I am thinking of a food diary so yes will start that now...I'm just feeling exhausted and fatigued on the sofa now, this is a common theme the last few days. I'm pretty fed up as we don't know what's up with me yet, but guess it's a long waiting game :/

It is always wise to check the total carb content on all foods that come in packaging, whether it be tins, boxes, tubs, or packets. If it has more than 10g per 100g. put it back on the shelf. The exception to this is with condiments that you only have a teaspoon full of. Indeed, much less than 10g per 100g is preferable. Do check carefully before you eat. Tinned soups are not good because they are thickened with flour and may contain added sugars.

Hi. It could be diabetes or something else. Some people feel unwell with only slightly raised blood sugar. I felt fine when my sugars were in the 30s (which is why diabetes can be a symptomless but dangerous condition). Do see the GP to get checked out.

Think I will start doing this... The soup was a fresh one from tesco with lentils and tomatoes... I'm just scared because I don't know what to do...I've never had my blood sugar tested, I don't know what the urine test results yesterday were as I didn't ask, so I'm just in this weird limbo but feeling more awful by the day...I had to go to a training course today and felt terrible... Nothing the trainer said stuck in my head at all, all feels like a blur...its just worrying and I can't do anything about it... Very tearful too which is unlike me. Sorry, know I sound so dramatic when I've not even been diagnosed with anything :/

There is obviously something wrong for you to feel so ******, so you aren't being dramatic at all, and tears are allowed. The worst part is always the waiting for the tests and then waiting for the results. If you do have high blood sugars, worrying about it won't help at all.

In case it is high BS my advice is to just eat meat/fish/eggs and veggies/salads this weekend. No sugar/cakes/biscuits. Cut out the bread/spuds/rice/pasta/cereals. Drink loads of water. See if you feel any better. Even if you don't have high BS it won't do you any harm.

The fresh soup from Tesco and anywhere else will have been thickened with flour or potato. Soup is only safe if you make it yourself. :(

Yes cutting carbs is always good for the soul and body :)
I was stupidly tempted to buy a blood sugar monitor today but then thought what's the point as a) waste of time if it turns out I'm not diabetic but something else and b) I don't know what it means anyway, just almost did it out of curiosity... If I was still in my old job I'd be testing my urine all weekend to check it too... Just frustrated as all of a sudden my symptoms have got worse, like really bad in just 4 days *big sigh*

First I would ask if you went to the doctors because you were feeling ill the way you do now. Is it possible that you may have a flu bug or an infection. I take it when you ate the same kind of food before you felt unwell they did not affect you like that and you do say you have only been feeling rotten for a few days. I would wait until you get the result of your fasting blood test and see what that shows . As already said diabetes does not always give any symptoms and even if it does they do not usually come on that quickly and start affecting what you eat straight away where a virus or infection would make you feel like you do

Hi :)
I have been feeling what I call ropey for 2-3 months but due to my job and lifestyle (long hours, long commute and two kids) I kind of just powered through it all then put it down to stress / tiredness etc. But I've just had a month of as training for another job, and haven't had that hecticness thus had to face up to the fact that this has been going on for ages and it's time to see the GP as not going away.
It's a long list that I took to the doctors...I'm just feeling angry at myself for letting it go on for this long because if it is something serious I dread to think the damage I may have done, and I really don't understand why I'm feeling so awful this last few days...maybe you're right and it's just a virus thing? :)

Sorry forgot to add... I started noticing that after eating bread / pasta etc I felt very nauseous and generally awful so stopped eating proper bread and cut down pasta to once a week, as I thought maybe my body just hates gluten.
I've also done three pregnancy tests last few weeks due to the constant going to the toilet thing, and been taking paramol daily because I'm constantly waking up during night and also in morning with headaches, but have put them down to stress etc before :)

Hi :)
Yes I have a fasting blood test Monday then a double appointment with the GP for swabs etc and she wants a diary of my symptoms for the week, but I guess I've been ignoring it all for so long due to various factors that now I'm scared of what is wrong and if I've done damage by delaying a health MOT.
Thank you for replying to me, this forum is great :)

Well hopefully your test will sort things out as to what's wrong but try not to worry to much it is doubtful that even if you do have diabetes you won't have done any lasting damage. Once you have it sorted you can start to make some changes like you have already been doing by lowering the starchy carbs. Just takes things one day at a time and you will be fine. A lot here use a blood glucose meter to check on the affect foods has on their BG levels so as you have a meter you may want to do that once you know whats what

Yes I just feel so all over the place at the moment and I'm very tearful (hence 3 prep tests but all negative and no other signs)... Even if I'm not diabetic I'm obviously hating carbs because they make me feel awful so time to cut them out... That can't be that much of a bad thing :)

When I was diagnosed as type 2, my level was 35.8 and the hospital rang to say see my gp urgently. I never had any symptons
