Hi Rob1883, Welcome to the forum, I am Type2 was diagnosed in Jan this year. Try not to get too down and depressed, there are lots of good friendly people on here who will always answer any question you ask. We are all having to deal with the diabetes and fighting the same battle. So you are not alone please keep talking to us all and hopefully we can help you feel a bit better about yourself. we all get a bit down at times, people all over the world too, just think of us all as your friends. Good luck :):):)

Hi Rob1883, welcome!

I was diagnosed type 1 last week following a ketotic issue.... You are most definitely not alone!

Hi and welcome

I was only diagnosed last month so am still learning myself - this forum is a great source of information and fun chat too - please do look around and join in (that is what I am doing) - nice to meet you :)

Hi @Rob1883 I've been diagnosed nearly 27 years type 1, we all struggle sometimes :) do you struggle with any particular aspects of your diabetes? If you would like to share what it is you struggle with people could maybe help?

Are you on injections? Do you tests your bg?

When you do test how are your bgs? I ask because if levels aren't great that can have a big impact on mood..
You shouldn't need to worry about what you're eating & drinking, obviously it should be at the back of your mind to be aware of the choices you're making but if you inject to cover what you're having you should stay pretty stable, do you carb count?

If you are wanting to take back some control you could maybe start by saying you will test a couple of times a day? I never used to be bothered with testing but I just started slowly (there no point going from barely testing to saying you will be the worlds best tester) do you drive? If you do, you are by law required to test before getting behind the wheel.

Carb counting will help you stay a bit more stable and prevent yo-yo bgs, people tend to start with for every 10g of carbs you eat, you inject 1 unit of your fast acting insulin. I'll tag a couple of people that can hopefully provide a link or 2 for you to have a read about it @himtoo @tim2000s @noblehead

Do you see a DSN?

I dont drive atm no, and im dyslexic so carb counting sounds awful for me.. anything to do with numbers just frazzles my brain. And whats a DSN?

Hi @Rob1883 , as you've been put on basal/bolus, which you have, then unfortunately, you will need to carb count as that's how the system works. I've copied something I wrote elsewhere about it below.

This page will help you understand how to carb count: http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

You may also need to adjust your basal, and this one describes how to ensure you have the right levels: https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/ Incidentally, MySugr is also the world's most popular recording app, and there are many people who find it really useful, so it might be worth you taking a look at for your other query.

Having said that, the key relationship is between what you do and eat and your blood glucose levels. What recording bg does is allow you to understand what is happening to you and to see patterns of both behaviour, food and reactions between insulin and the food you eat. Have a read of this http://bit.ly/d_3Rs to help you understand - I've found it to be an effective way of using logging. Why is this important? It allows you to take responsibility for managing your own condition, which is critical in doing well with it.

You've mentioned that you struggle with numbers and feel very down. This feeling is really quite normal and you can ask your clinic for psychological support. It would also be worth talking to your hospital clinic, which will be the consultant and Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN), about alternative treatment strategies to the one you are on. Whilst Multiple Daily Injections is considered to be the most effective (the name for what you are using) there are other approaches that you can use that would make the numbers less difficult but will require more discipline on your part. Please get in touch with them about it.
