Hi All,

Back again for some advice. I went for a walk on Friday evening, stopped to answer my phone and then when I went to start walking again, I'd been standing the whole time, all of a sudden I felt very very faint, and wanting to vomit, and almost passed out.

I did eventually manage to get back to my car (no I did drive) but I thought this might have been my first every Hypo? in the glove box I knew I had some jelly sweets and there was water also in the car, popped a few jelly's and drank water nothing really seemed to improve... Sadly I didn't have any glucose on me.

So I got out of the car and breathed! As I was clutching at straws with as to what was wrong with me (I wasn't exactly able to think clearly) and thought fresh air whist leaning on a wall being better than the air in the car.

I took me 2 hours to finally gain strength and stop feeling faint.

Basically Help? Any idea's, was that a Hypo? I am calling the Dr's in the morning and if I get past the receptionists, I might be lucky in seeing a doctor. Odd thing was that it also affected my eyes.

Probably too much to just be one thing, but I know this is the best place to ask questions.

We're you sweating, shakey or confused, have you a blood glucose machine ? Without knowing what you blood glucose was at the time it's difficult to say if it was a hypo or not.

Hi @wookie101 ,

I'm afraid that if you don't know your blood sugar levels then it's impossible to know if was a hypo or something different.

What medicaation are you using?

Hi good point,

I'm on Metaformin SR 1500 a day and did my meter when I finally got back in at 00:51 and it was 6.2

Metformin will not usually cause hypo's, it's not supposed to work that way. It can be responsible for upset stomachs and sickness though. Some people just cannot take metformin in any form. How long have you been using it?

Hi,

I've been on it for a year now, when I moved to the Slow Release version, it got rid of all the side effects for me.

Are you sure that you don't just have a 'bug' of some description? Eat anything that might have disagreed with you?

Also should have mentioned above, a hypo is technically having blood sugars below 4.0mmol/L. You might feel a bit strange at 6.0 if you'd previously been very high for long time.

Hi,

No I just had a normal day, so not a Hypo is what you are saying, it must be something else then as food wise I'd had some fish and chips earlier, so nothing to major or unusual...

I'm beginning to think it might be low blood pressure on searching the internet, which apparently you can be susceptible to if you have diabetes, so I'm still learning...

I don't think anyone can say whether it was or wasn't a hypo if you weren't able to test when you were feeling odd. Did you eat the jelly sweets from you glove box before you got home to get a reading of 6?

I have low blood pressure :)

I feel this way a lot of the time. Especially if I'm eating foods that are low in salt. I don't know why, but if I have something with carbs in it, and lie back with something propped under my head, I will feel better in about 30 mins.

I just did a blood panel to see if my iron and B12 levels are ok. They can induce low blood pressure sometimes. This may be helpful to look at.

Did you feel dizzy or have a ringing or deafness in the ears at all?

I been having those same symptoms for a while now and have (with docs permission) reduced my metformin....

As said earlier you usually dont get Hypos with Metformin , but I had several low 4s and a 3.8 , so you could easily have had one , and the sweets you had knocked you back up to the 6.1 later

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies.

Tpas I hadn't noticed but yes lots of my food is low in salt and yes I occasionally get ringing in my ear and feel dizzy every now an then but to be honest thats been normal (I think for me) but whats the blood panel you mention?

Mfactor, I agree I think the large handful of jelly's pushed my bloody sugar up to 6.2 because simply that handful should have pushed me up to 8-10 easy, so logic dictakes that my bloods must have been low, some how on metformin.

As an update I've now seen the Dr, (she dismissed it being a hypo as I'm metformin) she thought it could have been 3 things, some viral infection being one of them. However oddly she found high blood pressure (I had been having salt rich foods) all weekend, so eating normally and going for another blood pressure test in 10 days and then take it from there.

So not solved, but thanks and lets see what happens next.

I'm glad you mentioned this. Ringing in the ears is not normal. I have this too.

So, routine blood tests don't cover everything. My doctor asked for a few things: B12, Iron, thyroid and an ECG.

My B12 came back as deficient and my iron is on the low side of normal. That takes care of why I've been feeling tired, but the other symptoms aren't related, I've been told.

She's now getting me an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist to see if maybe what I have is vertigo. I notice that I get dizzy and such, even if I simply bend over to pick something up.
