I eat a low carb diet but I do have either a banana or a couple of apples for breakfast (10.00hrs). I saw on here somewhere that these are full of sugar so what does everyone else eat for mid morning snacks?

Hi @Spirit01
it is a great question and for those of us that do look at carb alternative snacks one of my favourites is
to take a slice of wafer thin ham , spread a bit of cream cheese on the ham ( philadelphia )
and wrap it around a spring onion
gorgeous taste -- very low carb

Mini peppers filled with cream cheese. Asda mini cheese selection, approx. 1oz each, their chilli mini sausages are good too. Or there is a favourite of mine - a boiled egg with the yolk dent filled with mayo.

Cheese
Nuts
70% solid choc
Kale crisps
Coffee or hot choc (with cream)

Although i tend not to need snacks nowadays. I usually have a couple of squares choc mid afternoon, but in all honesty that isnt hunger, it is distraction/short break from work as my interest flags at the end of the day. :D

Sounds delicious

Thank you everyone. Some good ideas in there. I don't eat breakfast as I have a power coffee made with coconut oil but I need a top up around 10.00hrs.

Pork scratchings are another option, I keep a couple of bags in the cupboard so those days when I don't want my usual cheese or nut snacks

I don't lose weight easily, but there was a 4 month period about 18 months ago when I DID lose, slowly and consistently.

As far as I remember (I am getting old ya know), my diet of the time included a protein brekkie, 4 squares 70% at 11am, a bag of pork scratchings EVERY workday lunch, some cold meat and salad with the scratchings, and a low carb dinner. Quite a lot of calories, fat, salt and protein, but the weight just kept slipping infinitesimally away.

Since then, I have tried various other options, lower protein, less animal protein... but the weightloss stalled and has never restarted. Just the odd half pound every now and then.

Sorry about that ramble.
I just wanted to pay tribute to chocolate and pork scratchings. lol.

Is there such a thing as too much cheese? I usually eat those cheese slices or cheese sticks, since I don't know much about other kinds of cheese.

What do you think caused the stall? Are you now at your target weight?

I wish i knew. And am a loooong way from ideal weight.
I am currently eating less than back then, less fat, less protein, and approx the same activity levels.
It could have been work stress (cortisol blocks weight loss) but when the stress went, the weight stayed stalled...

My current theory is insulin resistance (plus my usual hormone mayhem)
Insulin resistance is lowered by:
Going keto - check
Exercise - problematic due to back and knee, though i walk the dogs daily
Fasting - been doing IF 16/8 with coffeencream as brekkie to no avail
Drugs - my HbA1c is too low to get a prescription for metformin which would lower IR

Obviously missing something.
Sigh.

But then my endocrinologist is always impressed when i haven't gained since my last appt.
So maybe my 'holding pattern' is actually a triumphal achievement. Who knows?

One certainty; if i raise my carbs, i gain.
And if i lower calories a smidge more i hit Hungry Rage and risk a killing spree (and no, I ain't joking).

I guess we just play with the hand we are dealt.

This vid explains the theory

Is your thyroid function ok? I struggle with loosing weight and I believe its because of thyroid. Despite being on thyroxine still get many symptoms :(

Thyroid test is fine.
Hair and nails, fine.
Don't feel the cold.
- so thyroid seems Ok.

I wondered about vit D3 deficiency (i have been deficient for years) but i have been supplementing for nearly a year now.
No weight loss.

Thanks for asking though. :)

Perhaps i should explain the hormone chaos though - PCOS and reactive hypoglycaemia means insulin resistance, plus more insulin resistance caused by obesity. Plus a benign pituitary gland tumour, which causes excess prolactin => Hunger. Then the meds for that cause more insulin resistance.

Sorry, have derailed thread. Just thought i had better explain why the ol' Eat Less Move More idea is a bit inadequate. Lol.

I'm just obsessed with thyroid problems! Gives me more problems than diabetes at the moment :( Hope you will find a solution soon. It is very frustrating when you try to loose weight and nothing works

Yes indeed.
Have you seen any of Eric Berg's articles and you tube and books on hormone issues. Very enlightening. He talks about thyroid, ovaries and adrenals, with their effect on the liver. Well worth a read, if your root issue is hormones.
