Hello All. I am a 46 year-old female who has suffered from uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes for about 10 years (no meds or anything) and uncontrolled high blood pressure. Due to this, I suffered a mini stroke the end of January. When in the hospital, they put me on metformin and insulin to bring the sugar levels down (they were over 300 and my A1C was 14). Everything was fine with my vision. After maybe 2 weeks, weird things happened with my vision. I do suffer from diabetic retinopathy unfortunately. I was told I had some macular edema in my right eye. After my blood sugars were under control, at first, I couldn't see very well close up as it was blurry. It lasted maybe a couple of days then went back to normal. Now, I can't see far that well and I need glasses because it is all fuzzy. Also, everything seems a bit hazy when I'm under florescent lights or outdoors. I've read that this can happen when you start using insulin and your blood sugar levels drop to normal all of a sudden. It's been 4 months and my vision is still off. I am due to get an avastin shot in my eye for the retinopathy the first week of June. Does anyone know when my vision will return to normal?

Hi. I think you need to continue to seek the advice of an expert ophthalmologist. It does sound like you have some permanent damage so we would be unable to comment on whether it will clear. All you can do is maintain good blood sugar levels to avoid any further damage and hope there is suitable treatment. Good luck.

Hi @Tombis

As your already under the care of a Ophthalmology Clinic you should contact them if you have concerns about your eyesight, I suffered from diabetic retinopathy and when it was active my Ophthalmologist always said if I was concerned about anything I had to contact the clinic or go to A & E where the on-call Ophthalmologist would be called.

Don't wait until June if your really concerned or you see a deterioration in your vision. Good luck.

Hi
I have diabetic retinopathy also and after years of laser treatment I have just had a Vitrectomy. My surgeon once told me that eyes like sugar so any improvement in blood sugar control (especially over a shirt period of time) might cause a decline in vision or a decline in the retinopathy. I would contact your eye clinic and explain your situation and they might bring your appointment forward. I wouldn't worry too much retinopathy takes years to develop so waiting for your next appointment shouldn't make much difference.

X

Thanks everyone. I have already been to two opthamologists and two retinologists already. It seems this is a sugar issue I think. When the blood sugar is high and then you get it lowered with insulin, this can happen.
