Type 2 and doc wants me higher than I like

As long as you aren't on any medications that could cause a hypo then there's no problem. I would like my HbA1c to be in the 30s.

My hbalc is 31 or 5% and my GP said ,his words,"you have good control!," and left it at that

@numan43 dont be confused, I have learned with this doc, I need to do my own research and do what I need to be below what she says. Keep off the chips, carbs, etc. the more good fat and less carbs is great for me anyway. At least here in US, doctors are all in big pharm and insurance pockets, not sure how it is where you are

I think that the issue is that many doctors ares seing blood sugars that they have never seen before and never believed were possible, with more and more of us following LCHF. You have 2 options, slightly loosen up on the carbs or, my preferred one would be to keep the carbs tight, reduce or remove any remaining medication and keep your levels at 'non diabetic' levels naturally. What have you got to lose?

Daniel, I recommend reading the Bernstein book and seeing if you like his approach. He sees normal BG as 4.6 before meals and 5.6 after.

And his video course on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs_TA02I6IvV6-1s2pL4BPhvMo0Ck_lcY

Also the Jenny Ruhl website is brilliant for Type 2s: http://mobile.dudamobile.com/site/phlaunt1?url=http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/#2793

You are quite right that the level your doc is recommending is too high. You want to avoid the damage to your blood vessels.

Having said that, Torq is talking great sense about setting a time period to adjust over.

Hi all. been away for awhile, but finally got into the open door clinic here. i told her i would like to try prozac to bring down my bs, and she actually let me do it. 3 days after i started the prozac, i dropped from 8.3 after i wake up to 6.8 and levels during the day are 4.9 through 7.. i am going to drop my metformin down to 500mg a twice a day from 1000mg twice a day as i feel i am getting a tad low. today i had my right eye strobing when i was 4.9 and i just felt strange. does anyone know which is better for the body, prozac or metformin.

I am in the US and on insulin. It has been mentioned some Docs like higher levels for T 1's to avoid hypos but generally that it not a concern for T2's. Maybe when that doc turns 15 she will figure that out. 80-120 is a perfect goal.

Low carb and get off meds if you can. Some can, some can't.

If I was you, living in the States (and yes, I know America is a big place, but you have internal flights) I would book me an appointment with Dr Richard Bernstein, if you can afford it. At the very least I would buy his book and watch all his videos 'The Diabetes University' and the replays of his seminars. In the first instance (I believe his initial consultations last something like a full day, but then he follows up his patients with video links etc so he sees people from all across the States / world - and he is in his mid 80s so, apart from his passion / fervour re diabetes treatment - he'll have to give up sometime. His book and website is called 'The Diabetes Book'

In my opinion, you have 'The best of the best' right out there in the States. Just read Dr Bernstein's personal story on his website, it is absolutely inspirational. You are looking for real people with real experience, Dr Bernstein, a successful engineer, retrained as a Doctor in his early forties in order to be able to treat other diabetics, using his protocol which he had discovered, testing his blood sugars when blood sugar meters had just been discovered. He stabilised his t1 diabetes and reversed his diabetes complications by tightly managing his blood glucose levels, adhering to a strict low carbohydrate diet and reducing insulin levels to minimal amounts, not 'industrial quantities' that his previous regime had required. Good Luck

I may be wrong but I have not heard of a doctor in the UK prescribing Prozac for lowering BG levels. It is a drug used here mostly for depression and anxiety

no, i dont think prozac is generally prescribed for lowering levels. after reading somewhere that diabetics get prescribed prozac for depression and one of the good side effects is that it lowers bg levels. i finally have a doc that will listen to me, and when i said i wanted to try it with metformin to help with weight loss and lower bg levels she said she has never heard of it being prescribed for that either. i said i would like to try it, and i am feeling a bit stressed lately. she said ok. in the past month since starting prozac i have lost about 10 pounds +/-, my morning reading have dropped from 145 (sorry, cant find the converter) to 125-130, because of my levels i stopped doing 1000mg met 2x daily and do 1000 in morning and 500 at night. dropping it again down to 750x2 daily. i know, same amount, but should even me out a bit. if i still do good on that, will go to 500 x2 daily. since i have leveled out a bit, i no longer notice or feel weird when i get low. used to be at 77-80 i would get shakey, feel awful, and my eyes would strobe. i was just 63 a bit ago before lunch and i only had a small hunch i was low.

@LucySW beat me to it!

Jenny Ruhl and the bloodsugar101 website will arm you perfectly for your next round with your 12 year old.

:)

oh and i do notice i get EXTREMELY exhausted, mentally and physically when i come up from being that low. is that normal?

Yes.
Be gentle with yourself after a hypo. go to bed early. eat lots of low carb food. try not to give in to the carb cravings.
Have some low carb comfort foods around (my fave is low carb hot choc)
- and you will feel better in the morning.
it may take a couple of days to feel 100% again, but don't worry, you WILL get there.
