Eurgh, I feel so shattered and fed up. No idea what's going on.

  • Went to bed at midnight = 6.1 mmol.
  • Woke at 2am = 13 mmol so took a 2.5 unit correction and went back to sleep.
  • Woke at 6am = 2.9 mmol. Had a glucojuice and biscuit and went back to sleep.
  • Woke at 7am = 12 mmol. Took a 1 unit correction because of what happened earlier (usually would take more like 2 or 3 units for a 12 mmol reading). Went back to sleep.
  • Woke at 9am = 2.5 mmol. Had a glucojuice and breakfast cereal and reduced my usual bolus by 50% because of the low.
  • 10am = 11.5 mmol. 1 unit correction and I shot down to 3 mmol an hour later.
I've just been yo-yoing like this all morning and feel so zoned out with a banging headache. Never had any issues like this before.

I did increase my basal to 12 units 2 days ago and maybe this is proving too much. I don't know.

Just a rant really. Diabetes is rubbish all the time, but this morning it's just been a true nightmare :(

Diabetes really does suck more than usual at times, I would suggest decreasing your basal rate a little and see how it goes for the next couple of days. If that doesn't work maybe try and reduce your correction dose? If all else fails try and talk to your diabetes team and see what they say :) Hope it works out for you, all the best from me!

Ouch that's a rough ride! I would decrease your basal also and see how you get on, hope you're feeling ok so and the yo-yoing stops!

Heya, sorry to hear this. 12 units is a big increase, why this amount ? As others have said would be wise to reduce.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant that I increased it to 12 units (from 10 units). I think my honeymoon period is coming to an end.

Ah ok, yes drop it back down, sounds like your pancreas is still squirting, also aim to be at 7-8 mmol/l before bed if you can, best to stay safe rather than hypo in the night, hope you have a better night tonight ;)

Do you have a pen that goes in 1 unit increments or is it one of those Autopens that goes up in 2's?

A pen that allows 1 or 0.5 unit dose increments would be better for you perhaps

Well after the awfulness of yesterday, last night and today has been perfect, so far (even with cereal, bagel and eggs for breakfast)...

I did reduce my Lantus back down last night.

Hopefully Friday night and yesterday morning was a blip .... fingers crossed I'm back on track (touch wood). :)

If I go to bed with a blood sugar level of below 10mmol/ls, I expect to wake up on a level of between 1.8 and 2.4 7 hours later.
I have messed around with reducing my basal dosage regularly but have found having a high blood reading before bed is the only way to negate the morning low effect.

My nurse can't explain the reason.

You could try two things. Either split your basal or move the time you take a single shot to the morning.

All the evidence currently available has resulted in DAFNE making patients on Lantus move to Levemir and use a split basal as it results in reduced overnight hypos.
