i have been type 2 diabetic for about 14 years now and my morning blood sugar was usually between 5.5 and 7.0 recently it has gone up to 8.3 to 8.9 even though i am strict with my diet and i stick to the same tried and tested foods on a daily basis.I have not done anything different and i wandered if anyone could shed some light on why this is happening???

Hi and welcome,

How often do you test yourself? Do you test before and after certain meals and at bedtime? If so, have these levels also increased? If not, maybe you should give it a go and keep a record.

Hi and welcome,
If you have had diabetes for so long there maybe many reasons why you have suddenly gone up just a little more than usual.
Have you had your yearly hba1c lately?

If not I would have a word with your GP.

It could be your insulin resistance has gone up!

I test myself 4 times a day and all the other tests are within normal levels its only the morning one that has changed. Even if my levels are below7.0 last thing at night mylevels are higher in the morning ???

hi bluetit 1802 thank you for your reply . I dont understand it as all my other readings for the day are at normal levels. Even if my blood sugars are below 7.0 when i go to bed they are very high in the morning????

Morning levels can be very unpredictable due to our livers dumping glucose in our blood stream after fasting all night. (There are thousands of threads on this forum about this, it is called Dawn Phenomenon or Liver Dump - you can use the search button to find these threads.) However, after so long with normal levels it does seem strange and a bit of a puzzle. Normally when our morning level increases our other before meal levels will also increase. Have you tried testing before lunch and before evening meal to see if they are still normal for you? These are what we call our base levels - the levels we run at during the day apart from post meal.
