David Cameron is out too.

I wonder what prat takes over in October as Osborne may be next as it will only be the same for us as they let the rest of the world in instead but the others they can't get rid of them so that will hamper the new government to try and kick them out but at least he is going that was on tv at 0815 this morning but try not to put Johnson in as he won't know what to do full stop as not been in politics for long enough and only going to the meetings in downing street when he was wanted

My son said he would love Boris Johnson to be the next PM ?? I said NO, he is like the embarrassing uncle at family weddings and would only be good at children's parties and Bar Mitzvah's, but it did make him laugh.

Forgive my ignorance, but does having a new Conservative leader trigger a general election? Otherwise the country will be run by someone that NO ONE voted for, rather then someone simply the majority didn't vote for!

No, remember Gordon Brown wasn't elected.

I think David Cameron should be made to stay until the end of his term and not let him skulk away just because it didn't go the way he wanted. He should respect the way the public voted man up and get on with doing the job he was elected for

Yes I do agree, but in such a divided party it was only a matter of time before he was unseated anyway, maybe he thought now was the right time to leave rather than waiting to be pushed..............who knows.

@Robinredbreast ...I would agree.....I always remember Boris Johnson at the handover of the Olympics from Beijing to London....he looked such a scruff standing there waving the flag and I thought 'what sort of message does this send out to the rest of the world'.....was most definitely an embarrassing uncle moment....

I agree. He should have taken a deep breath, respected the results and said ,'right, onwards and upwards'. I am very sorry and shocked that he has resigned. I reckon BJ would do a good job. I am sure it will pan out, today was a massive knee jerk reaction to a result many were not expecting I suspect.

Referring to Boris Johnson as BJ has put me off my brekkers with the mental image!

Yes I expect you are right and he would of have had to go eventually but to try and save face he will now always be able to say he resigned he wasn't sacked. I don't know what would become of the country if everyone when something was not quite going the way they wanted it to just walked out on their job

I still think Johnson is a scruff and childish but at least when he tried to leave home yesterday he got stuck behind the cyclists for a while and he got heckled I would of just dumped him in the nearest river and just walked away as I just can't stand him or farage as he should be put in the English channel on the French side so that they can do what they want to him for what he said to them before he left the European parliament and every one else that was there which was a little racist to them and I hate racism doesn't matter who it is towards I just don't want to hear it from people's mouths even the old people do it without them knowing it and I think within a few months corbyn will be out as well so that will be good as he is useless as well so government is still the same as normal boring and useless and not worth the vote

Radio 4 reported that people close to Cameron are saying he doesn't want to do the hard slog of spending months negotiating the exit treaties with the EU, only to hand it to Boris Johnson on a plate.
He should send Boris Johnson and Gove (and Farage?!) to negotiate the deals. That should be entertaining.

No, you don't vote for the Prime minister, but your local mp. The party with the majority forms the government with their leader being Prime Minister. If the party leader resigns/dies the deputy leader takes over until a new one is elected by party members.

I am pretty sure that if Boris is in the final two contenders for leader that gets put to the Conservative membership, there will be hundreds of thousands of people signing up to become members (costs just £10), to exert influence one way or the other.

Very similar to what happened with the election of the new Labour leader following the 2015 General Election.

He won't handle them, he'll bail at the same time as Cameron, we'll have a new right wing PM and a Brexit cabinet.

Sobering times, far right and far left:(

Still waiting for Osborne to go... Can't see how he can stay when he was pro..

Maybe form a solid active shadow government?

Indeed:)

Just watched Ozzie on BBC...even more convinced together with Governor of BoE, he will focus on stability and continuity and has said he will address his own future in the coming days....seems to have temporarily settled the markets shortly after opening this morning.

I'd disagree. If someone wants to negotiate brexit, I'd rather have someone whose heart was in it. His clearly isn't. And I fully understand why he didn't trigger article 50. Remember, he can quit his job, just like anyone else, if he doesn't like the terms.

He's now given the civil service three months to establish just how much Brexit is going to cost the UK government and it will be placed in front of his successor with a note that says 'Now sell that to the British public - I'm not sure they want those cuts to [name your favourite service].' It is a poisoned chalice.

So at the end of today the FTSE 250 has dropped another 7% more than at any time, in any crisis since the mid 80's, banking stocks, a customary bellwether of our economic stability have been decimated, sterling has fallen further, S&P and Fitch have both downgraded our status to AA with a negative view of the potential economic impact.

I get the strong feeling, though I could be wrong that many of the core economic forecasts termed "Project Fear", may sadly turn out to be accurate.

Sadly Kevin, the experts that no one on the leave side wanted to believe knew what they were talking about. That's why they are called experts.

But hey, we don't need experts, right? It's just scaremongering. *bangs head against brick wall*
