Hi, I have been low carb for a while, but 2 weeks ago, I started doing it seriously. This has improved my blood sugar levels in the mornings, they were often the highest in the day. My diet now is basically meat, eggs, fish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, butter and coconut oil. Have cut out rice, oatcakes, buckwheat and potatoes, the occasional bag of crisps and maltesers.
My problem is I seem to be putting on weight and my waist measurement has increased by about 5 cm in a fortnight. It could just be bloat, but I am not constipated.
Suggestions welcome

Are you drinking enough water!
Are you still eating too much?
Have you increased your exercise? if you can!

It is a personal thing, and you do have to find your own 'diet' lifestyle that suits you.
You are eating all the right foods to lose weight, it probably just needs tweaking to get the balance right. Well done on getting your blood glucose levels down!

Hi and welcome!

I am wondering if you have maybe increased consumption of a food that you have an intolerance towards?

I blow up like a balloon if I eat too much wheat or milk. In your case, it could be any food, or additive, that has increased with your new diet...

Just speculating, of course. Must be rather demoralising for you. :( Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Normal allergies are gluten, lactose, or milk.
So if you haven't cut out dairy, it could be a start.

But
'meat, eggs, fish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, butter and coconut oil'
All very calorific foods.
I balloon out simply from eating too many calories, do you count calories, and if so, how many are you eating a day?
Can you give us an idea of what you eat?

Kate - I don't know your age, but could this be hormonal at all? I know some folks have a tendency to bloat a bit, which could manifest itself as weight gain (it's usually water) and thickening waistline.

SunnyExpat has mentioned allergies. I just wonder if that has an influence on developing diabetes do many people who already had food allergies like gluten, lactose nuts etc go on to develop diabetes is that just one more thing that could make us more predisposed to diabetes

Thanks, i seem to be doing all the right things, lots of fluid, walk a lot etc, don't count calories, so may be eating too mch, but not sure I can eat less. I do have an underactive thyroid to add to the mix.

Cut out wheat and most dairy, except butter, caffiene, alcohol, sugar etc sometime ago.

Don't count calories, but eating less than I was, so should be losing.
Omelette with onion, garlic, courgettes, mushrooms, spinach
Tinned fish with salad, carrots, cabbage, avocado, courgettes, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes
Chicken and veg for dinner.

61,have underactive thyroid treated with levothyroxine. Also have very little large intestine, bowel cancer 16 years ago.
I started going to gym a year or so ago and my normal blood pressure went up. I have been reasonably low carb for 18 months and yet my blood sugar went up. My highest blood sugar level is always in the morning. Hopefully this will sort itself out as these other things have.

Count the calories.

I'd get thyroid hormones checked if I were you, that is FT4 and FT3.

Yes that's quite normal for (nearly) everyone! Read up on the Dawn Phenomenon aka liver dumps. And, yes, once your other (mealtime) levels are sorted out your morning levels should hopefully come down too.
