Has anyone seen the latest picture posted on Facebook by Diabetes UK? It is a picture of a woman with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other, lounging on the sofa with her belly fat on show. It is just so INSULTING to all of us who are working so hard to manage our condition and so unhelpful to all of those who are not yet diagnosed and think that they will never get diabetes because they are not "couch potatoes"

How can a picture on the Internet be insulting ?

It's not aimed at you or meant to depict you in any way.

I don't have the time or energy to care about stupid nonsense posted on Facebook.

These sort of threads are useless without some sort of link or pictures to reference..?

It just looks like someone having a "chillax" to me... Maybe a bad day at work?

'Rising obesity levels will lead to more than seven million new cases of diabetes, cancer, stroke and heart disease in the next 20 years, according to an alliance of organisations.'

Sometimes life isn't just diabetes.

I started reading the article, then got as far as ... Jamie Oliver - befure closing the page.

I guess they are trying to make a visual point using that pic .... typical journalistic type faff

Well my facebook friends know who I am and I've never smoked, drink only at funerals and should chill-out on the sofa more.
Just changed sofa big enough for the whole family. Last one was for 2 adults and a baby only.
Maybe we need to change into this person to beat diabetes?.....???

I noticed the hem of the <whatever you call it> has been lifted to show the pot belly. It's not staged then.

Unfortunately I believe this is a reasonable representation of far too many people. I think the aim is too shock and for people to maybe look at their lifestyles. I think it's very effective.

The piccy's of bits being chopped off did it for me since there was no doubt there was a problem. The lady in the photo might be quite healthy and happy but anyone who behaves like her are now going to be given a stigma. There are about three million diabetics in UK which means there are about 57 million who aren't. Some of them enjoy life drinking and smoking. Why should we spoil it for them.

Because there's more to life than diabetes, possibly the bigger picture recognises other health issues associated with being a smoking, drinking, overweight couch potato?

Just makes me want to open a bottle of dry white wine and spark up a cigarette and relax on the sofa as long as it's not more often than the odd occasion I don't see much of a problem with it.

It looks like healthy stressbusting to me. Well except for the real cig.

OK so why pick on diabetes?

It's on a diabetes website.

I have to admit, I'd be more cheesed off if it was on just the cancer, stroke and heart disease websites, and no one liked to mention diabetes, because the existing diabetics were a bit precious about it.
I was obese, I got diabetes.
I tell people that.

There must be a reason why people get so upset when images such as this one are used in relation to T2D.

I can't think what the reason can be, as they don't bother me, they make me giggle

Can all the diabetics who choose to become obese please stand up!
I'm obese because I'm diabetic. Not enough well commissioned insulin per food. Healthy food, never been rubbish but carbs in it.
Since I was 6-7yr old. GP in the 70s hadnt come across type 2 diabetes in a child only type 1.
I ate the same as my 2 sisters who arent diabetic. Hence obese.
Even at aged 31yr old with diagnosis. Very young for the old fashioned onset diabetes.
Luckily we know more now. Kids are screened when overweight.
I have my kids checked for thyroid failure too.
