I'm newly diagnosed and am getting readings of around 6 in the morning and around 7.5 - 8 , 3 hours after a meal . I would like it to be lower and feel a bit panicky when its that high . Sometimes I am ok with what I eat but at other times I feel like I don't really know what I'm doing .

6 is a good fasting number. If you are worried about what you're eating, try testing every hour or half hour after eating to see what happens to your numbers. 7.5-8 are quite good so I wouldn't worry too much about that unless you're spiking higher beforehand. For more help setting individual target ranges and learning how to get your numbers where you want them, talk to your doctor. They know you better than we do and can help you decide on your goals, and any medication/diet changes to help you get there.

Personally 7.5 -8 is much too high for me. How many carbs do you eat a day? Are you on any meds? Have you adopted a lower carb higher fat lifestyle?

Too high for me as well. too much time spent at those levels can be damaging. 6 as a fasting number is not crazy high but a low carb diet will help to get that down as well. Having said that I don't seem to be able to get mine out of the sixes either *sigh* but low carb keeps my PP numbers in the 5's and 6's so its a start.

Could you potentially be eating too much protein? Or foods that cause IR.
Maybe too much saturated fat? Many things can effect us as individuals. Even low carbs bread would send me

The proteins is a possibility. I am less than 20 grams carb per day. I have done low carb before with amazing success but this time it is not going so well. Right now the wheels are in motion to find out if I have lada. I have at least 4 other diagnosed autoimmune diseases and possibly more. My diabetes exploded back on the scene when I lost access to the biologic immune modifying drugs after 10 years or so of taking them. Went from reasonable numbers to A1c of 10.5 and at least one pp of 26. Should have the results of a c-peptide in the next couple days and as soon as I can get in to see an endo I will ask for the gad test. I am on metformin and forxiga and it does not seem to be helping much.

I am trying to adopt a lower carb lifestyle but am still not too sure what I can and can't eat . I'm soon due to attend the DESMOND course so maybe it will all become clearer . I am on Metformin .

I don't think I eat too much protein as I don't eat meat only fish a couple of times a week . I wonder if its the bread . Too much milk maybe .

The DESMOND course will not help you diet-wise. It will still be the old NHS mantra of eat carbs with every meal and have a jacket potato with baked beans for lunch.

What may help you are these:

http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/a-new-low-carb-guide-for-beginners.68695/

Additionally, your meter will tell you what you can and can't eat. Keep a food diary including portion sizes, record your before and after levels alongside, and look for patterns. Eat to your meter.

The bread and milk will not be helping.

@mumpat888 those numbers are very good for a newly diagnosed, I started with numbers in the mid-teens! I still get 7's in the mornings even now

The readings are not terrible on diagnosis, by way of contrast I was circa 16 fasting when first diagnosed. On a middle of the road observation it looks like relatively minor changes would see your numbers drop. The diet doctor I think is an excellent resource as it has pictures of what to eat and what not too, if you can either do or approach the low carb high fat diet, you will must likely see an improvement; I have noticed a difference in blood glucose and weight since dropping more of the slow release carbs I intake. As ever if you can fit in some regular exercise and plenty of sleep, this will help.

January 2015 HbA1c 134, 98 kg
March 2015 HbA1c 59 (2 x 500g Metformin), exercise and diet
Dec 2015 HbA1c 41 (2 x 500g Metformin), exercise and diet, 92 kg
March 2016 HbA1c 42 (1 x 500g Metformin), exercise and diet, 92 kg
June 2016 HbA1c 42 (1 x 500g Metformin), exercise and diet, 92 kg

More likely to be the bread.. what kind are you eating? I substituted regular milk with unsweetened soya milk and double cream.

If you have a Lidl near to you, try the high protein rolls. Very low carb ( about 8g per roll and you only need half a roll at once). People don't find they raise their BS levels. They certainly don't raise mine.

Bread of any kind only with extreme care here be dragons ! --- even aparently similar breads can have very different effects on different people,
Bread is slower burning sugar, whole grain bread is best looked on as a delayed action slower burning sugar.

Yes there is a Lidl nearby . Are these rolls gluten free ? I tend to have that as normal bread doesn't like me much !!
