I do not have diabetes
Hi My name is Norman I am retired and live in The Philippines. I have 3 sons who live in Sydney Australia. I was told yesterday that one of my sons aged 44yrs who blacked out whilst driving for work found out that the reason he blacked out was low blood sugar. I am trying to get to understand what low blood sugar is all about so I can pass on the information to him as he cannot communicate in the normal way as he has been totally deaf for over 13yrs. Despite this handicap he holds down a job driving a courier van and has done from before he lost his hearing so its not like he can just telephone someone and get information. At the time when he blacked out he had been on a fasting routine for several weeks ie eat a good breakfast then fast all day and maybe have a 200 calorie snack mid afternoon and then eat a normal meal after work. The morning he had the accident trough blacking out he had skipped breakfast for the fist time since fasting. I would just like to know what he has to do to completely avoid any future black outs or white outs as he called it. It is very important he avoids another episode of blacking out especially at work as that would be the end of his employment. Any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Norm

Here's some basic information @lungnorm

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/Diabetes-and-Hypoglycaemia.html

It would be best for your son to avoid driving until he finds out exactly what happened. If he had another blackout it could be very dangerous - both to him and to other road-users.

Is he on any medication? Does he have a specialist he sees who can help him find out why this happened? Does he test his blood sugar? It's difficult to comment on the possible cause without knowing a little more about your son's condition and what he's been diagnosed with if anything.

Can you tell us a little more?

maybe he should just stop fasting when working in a car and do his fasting when he has days off... it seems obvious that his "White out" is due to excessive fasting ...

Nothing obvious about it.. as we have no idea if the OP's son is taking any medication (or even if he has anything wrong with him) that may be the root cause of his hypo you have no idea what caused it. Not eating is highly unlikely to have caused this in my opinion.

you are right about that , but the father tells he has been fasting and only eat very little or extreemly little, in Australia it is very hot too... but guess he has aircondition in his vehicle...

maybe he is not even diabetic... so he could get low blood glucose from excessive fasting

It must be very worrying for you, Norm. Persuade your son to see his doctor.
