This basically was regarding my thyroid but he's very opened minded. I raised the issue of the LCHF diet and he said whereas it might he beneficial to obese/overweight diabetics in my case as a slim person on insulin I would run the risk of developing ketones with the high fat! However I think he might have thought I was Type 1 as he mentioned that my pancreas is producing antibodies which in fact it isn't.

I am very confused! Are all people here on the LCHF diet obese/overweight or are there exceptions?

I lost most of my weight before discovering LCHF for BG control. I've been following it for about 4.5 years now and my weight has varied by about 4-6 kgs during that time. My BMI is shown in my signature. However, I'm not on insulin, so can't comment in that regard.

Hi,

I am a slim T1 on insulin. (MDI.) the benefits are on LCHF (normal amount of fat in my case. I don't do "low or fat free" stuff.)
are... Once the basal level is set, lowering the chances of hypo. (or drifting too high.) Then a lower carb meal which needs less to bolus for cuts down on the roller coaster effect. Any hypos if at all are less severe. Allowing me to deal with a busy day with an easy "on the run" recovery should one happen.. Less correction doses too!

Ive never had "keytones" or ketoacitosis since diagnosis 40 years ago.. Unless your doc meant the keytones of weight loss which are different & it got mixed up? (Somebody put me right on this if I'm wrong?)
Personally, I don't feel your doc has a right handle on it. Either that or he didn't explain himself right??

I am Type 2 on Lantus, 7 units. Nothing else I have always been slim. He was there to talk about my excellent thyroid results, not my diabetes. I have another specialist for this within the same department.

I use Lantus too for my long acting "basal". I have always been slim. But bolus with novorapid.

So your doc was not a diabetes specialist.. Well done on your excellent thyroid results.!

Thank you! My diabetic specialist failed to notice my poor thyroid results and weight loss last year. It was my CP who noticed it and was furious with him!

Precisely, I wouldn't ask my doc about tapping out a broken manifold stud on my van.. Mind you, if he'd excersised a knowledge in engineering? I'd take my diabetes elsewhere... ;)

Hi @asparagusp If it was me, I'd just check what he meant about the antibodies (because else I'd worry and it would play on my mind) Was he suggesting you had LADA? Or was he muddled? Can you check your Endo notes to make sure?

My endocrinologist discusses me with my Diabetologist. However he might not have recently as tests in July proved I was Type 2.

My concern really is about my diet and whether I should follow LCHF. I eat on balance low carbohydrates and medium fat at the moment.

We're all different @asparagusp No one size fits all. The advice is to Eat To Your Meter and use your results to inform your food choices.

Ultimately, the choice is yours :)

Perhaps you could experiment with various amounts of macro nutrients to see what works for you? If you're confident adjusting your insulin, of course.

Thanks azure. I take on board what you say. My original question was are there any inherently slim people here following the LCHF diet with success of otherwise.

Most thyroid disorders are classed as an anti-immune attack. Similar to type1 pancreas attack.
That why I used to get confused about me being a type 2 diabetic. I thought I had same problem with pancreas.
I had thyroid problem diagnosed before diabetes but had diabetes symptoms first.
Could endo ment antibodies affecting thyroid not diabetes?

Yes, I believe there are, but I'm not sure if they're on insulin or not. Mainly not, I believe.

If you want to start a poll to get more info, then that might be an idea. You could specify if you only wanted Type 2s to reply, and also have choices that encompassed whether the person was diet only, tablets, insulin. Just an idea :)

I'm tempted to say "if it ant broke don't fix it". :)

I can think of many slim T2 LCHF ppl who post here regularly.

@AndBreathe
@Bluetit1802
@Oldvatr

Many, many people find that they lose any weight they need to, then continue with LCHF because it makes them feel so well, and is so enjoyable.

I am thinking of @debrasue @NoCrbs4Me and @hankjam

Then there are the many who used the forum but have now gone on to pastures new, who found that LCHF was the main tool that helped them do that. I could keep mentioning those names all day!

In answer to the points raised above. The Endocrinologist said my thyroid problem was caused by antibodies, "like my pancreas antibodies" A poll is a good idea and I will create one shortly! My post prandial readings have been dreadful up until three weeks ago but i would like to think I could improve them!

Thanks Brumia - Had any of them suffered side effects like ketones?

I lost weight on LCHF, reducing from a BMI of 31 to a BMI of 21. I continued with the LCHF but increased the fat and protein by eating extra eggs, cheese and more mayo, plus a glass of wine in the evenings. It was a struggle to find the right balance and I did keep losing weight initially, but once I did find the right balance I maintained my BMI of 21 and have done now for 2 years. I never increased my carbs. In fact I reduced them.

I'm 160cm tall and 47.5kg this morning. Using this morning's weight, that gives me a BMI of 18.5. I have very little fat in my body, at 17.7%, but muscle this morning was 34.9%. He'd need a decent imagination to call me obese.

I've been eating this way for going on 3 years. My stats are in my signature.

I don't take any meds, so we are quite different. You have to make your mind up how you live your life.

I've never been overweight and now follow lchf. Not on insulin, on metformin and gliclazide which I have halved in recent months.
