BG stay high after corrections

Hi. I started back on my insulin Saturday. My bs are 28 etc and so I do a correction mine is 1-5. And test again and again it's still the same so I redo it and no change. Insulin is new I use a new needle and I change the sight. I don't know what to do now so I'm just giving my normal regime and recording bs and that's all of can do. Any suggestions welcome of course. Cheers

Since you're so high you may need more for a correction, the higher you are the more insulin resistant you are I believe. Do you have a DSN? I'd give them or whoever is in charge of your treatment a call for an appropriate course of action. Be careful of giving multiple doses as stacking them can result in lows when they all kick in at different times
 
I'm very pleased you're taking your insulin again @nessa1970 :)

I second the advice to call your DSN if your blood sugar stays high. I would imagine it's similar to just after a Type 1 diagnosis in that it may take a few days for your blood sugar to get under control. I don't remember anything about doses, but I do remember I was on an insulin drip for a couple of days while my blood sugar was brought down.

You will need a higher correction dose if you're above 13 or so, but it will take longer to work so give it time.

Has your blood sugar remained up around 28 the whole time since Saturday or has it come down a bit then gone back up?

yes it's over 28 to hi, cept for the fasting mornings 21.... I'm taking 9 lantus morning an night and novorapid with food etc and corrections. It's not touching it atall. Before I could be 28 correct an it would drop. I'll ring dn tomorrow for advice. I'm still very very thirsty and weak can't do alot at once really. Peeing a bit alot lol. I just had a Hi reading so corrected 7 units so I'm waiting 2 hour to see were it lies. Should it have dropped by then azure?

I was HI so I corrected with 7 units novorapid. I'm waiting 1 hour more to check if it's dropped. I took it an hour ago. I'm OK weak thirsty as and hi to the toilet alot lol

I think rapid peaks at 90 minutes so hopefully by that point you'll see some improvement, remember to keep hydrated!

Is your DSN not contactable today? I'd be wanting to call them ASAP as I imagine you're feeling pretty miserable

That definitely needs a call to the DSN then. They should be able to advise you, but if your levels stay high and the DSN isn't available, you need to phone or visit the ER. Your body has been lacking in the insulin it needs for quite a while, so you may need help to get it down.

No, I wouldn't expect to see any drop at 2 hours. I know it can take mine around 3 hours to start moving if I'm, say, 15. I've never been as high as you are since diagnosis so I don't know how many hours it would take to work. Have you tested for ketones?

No its 8.30 in new Zealand. Yeah I'm pretty weak an thirsty an over drinking an I feel I can sit on the toilet and drink an it'll come right out lol. But I'll see how my bs is soon. Would 20 be an ok drop

Get some electrolytes too if you're flushing that much

If you were reading HI then I'd think 20 would be a fair drop, how much does one unit usually lower you?

I've been high above 20 the most part. Mostly high except for a 6 week period then it went up again. I'm use to 20 an upwards. I haven't check for ketone since sat. It was fine sat. I'll check that soon to an post the results ok.
 
Ok :) Was that 6 week period when you were really focussed on control? If so, that shows your BS can be controlled, so that's a positive thing. This is a bit of a different situation and I'm not sure how long it woukd take for your BS to come down. Indeed, it may be best to get it down gradually. With sugars that high, you will be very insulin resistant so your normal correction ratio won't work as it normally would.

Oh okay. Yes when I was really good for over 6 weeks but it started to go high like 13 10 in morning then I stopped it for 10 days. Back on full swing for 4 days. Bs are 20 21 in morning and 28 to hi any other time regardless. I'm just as thirsty as when of insulin an I'm very weak and tired. Hopefully maybe it'll drop more soon I'm drinking so much water

You have come down a bit then that's good, I'm unsure at what point it would be safe to give yourself another correction so hopefully someone else can advise on that
