hi i just wondering is there anyone here whos type 1 whos really insulin resistance as i have to inject 2.5unit to every 10 grams of carbs so just wanted to know how insulin resistance other type 1s are.

my I:C ratio is generally around 1u per 4 carbs ( so similar to 2.5u per 10 carb)
it varies a bit from morning to evening

When I did Dafne course I met a guy on 6u to 10g ratio.
This guy wasn't in anyway low carb and no one could quite believe how he managed to inject so much insulin daily.
Course instructors really struggled throughout the week.

And how much does that cost? It would financially break me !,, I take 2 -3 units novolog and one to two Lantus a day. Add strips, meters, etc and it LOL adds up. Very expensive disease !

All that would be free on the NHS in the UK :)

To put in perspective I'm on 2x60 mixed units of insulin (humulin m3) per 100g carb. But I'm type 2. Oh and metformin too. 2000mg daily.

Sorry I have to admit I know absolutely nothing about LADA but I'm intrigued... Is such a low dosage normal? I'm type one and fairly slim (112lb) but take 20 units Lantus daily (and between 4-8 of Novo Rapid, depending on what i eat). I know we're all different but never heard of anyone being on such a low dosage, it hardly seems worth it!

I take 2units to every 10g of carbs in the morning, 1unit to 10g at lunch, 0.5units to 10g at dinner and 0.25 to 10g before bed. But honestly don't get hung up on it, everyone is different. And my ratios have changed many times over the years. Also I believe as you take more insulin you become less resistant, so you may find over time you will reduce the ratio you are currently taking

I have to inject 3.3 units for 10g of carbs, absolutely hate having to take so much

I take 3 units to 10g of carbs Novarapid and 80 units of Lantus.must admit i hate taken so much insulin.

LADA is slow onset type one until insulin is eventually needed. The body attacks the pancreas until there is no natural insulin

Are those small doses normal? Probably not but I eat VERY low carb ( less than 20 a day and all above ground veggies) very moderate amounts of protein and healthy fats to satisfaction such as avocado olive oil nuts.
There are foods that make me insulin reaistant, raise me and keep me higher longer. Saturated fats, dairy and peanuts. I eat 3 small ( lean cuisine size) meals and a few nuts for snacks as needed. I have t eaten grains , starch, dairy for years and years, before I was diabetic.

When first diagnosed I was told to eat 20 carbs per meal and was on much higher doses but could never keep bs flat so I reduced carbs which of course reduced my needs for insulin. My bs typically runs between 80 and 100. Some exception after BF. Still can't keep that lower but injecting 1/2 unit 1.5 hours after I eat is helping. Still experimenting.

I do bolus for 1/2 my protein as well.

I am insulin resistent (type 1). I take 6U:10g carb for breakfast (plus a correction for DP - grrr). Much less for lunch at 1 to 1.5U:10g carb and 2U:10g for dinner. I take 52U Levemir, approx 60U Novorapid per day, also metformin and I am about to start taking the victoza injectable medication (which I am more than a little concerned about). Low carbing helps me to reduce my bolus dose, but I find I swing from hypo to high.

I swung from hypo to hyper as well.
You might try timing your dose differently or split doses. Both have helped me but I am very low carb and I do bolus for half my protein and make sure there's adequate fat in my meals.

Thanks Kristin - I think lower carb is the way to go, but I need to learn how to manage a consistent low carb diet (which is hard when working, travelling, kids and family meals) to avoid the big swings. If a mange to keep low carb for 2 consecutive meals my insulin resistence drops dramtically and that is when I get caught out and hypo. Why oh why do carbs taste so good! I feel like I am always on a learning curve and will never achieve a good level of control. I have also shifted my basal dose time a little and it seems to have helped. Little steps and little victories.
