Peer Pressure

I ate lunch - tuna salad, and my BG reading is up to 11 - higher than I have seen so far other than the one at diagnosis which was 17.1 - I am obviously really sensitive to carbs and need to take extreme care.

Any carbs would have been in the salad or dressing I would think as tuna has virtually zero carbs.

Not that I'm some sort of saint but I knocked the whole booze thing on the head some years ago and never looked back. I admire you for resisting the temptation to drink more but isn't 3 pints a lot anyway for T2 @Kenny3?

When my brothers saw me ordering soda water their reaction was "why drink soda water, you may as well drink all lager; 6 pints is not too different to 3 pints".

Fortunately none of my friends and neither of my brothers would comment on what I was drinking. I think if they had I would have asked for a cocktail umbrella to put in my tomato juice, thereby ensuring that they'd go and sit somewhere else.

Coming from a family with diabetics, coeliacs and various allergies including peanut, dairy and fish there is no pressure from family members to eat anything and we are all used to either bringing some of your own food or ensuring that there is something that everyone can eat and I always include cold meats, cheese, salad and sugar-free jelly and a Pavlova for hubby and others who can partake!!

Hi Nina Does your type 2 friend know the risks to her health? If my diabetic nurse had been my only source of information I do not think I would know anything more than recovery times are a lot longer and I must wash my feet before I go to see her (wearing crocs on the allotment is not conducive to socially acceptable trotters) . The Desmond course covered it but if your friend missed that or her group did not make an issue of them the risks could have been lost in the general morass of info.

I find the big problem is finding somewhere to eat anything but cake, burgers, pizza and noodles (I live in Coventry lets just say noodles are a local phenomena). The only places I have found so far are wetherspoons and a local vegetarian cafe. We were in central London a couple of weeks ago and ended up doing Wetherspoons for all 3 meals. We did try to find somewhere else but did not have time to get to the museums.
No! I don't believe she does! She is still diet controlled and has not really had any information, she is on the verge of taking insulin, (and then I guess she will get the lot!) she does seem aware, just can't help herself! But I wonder, when you don't have that meter you just don't realise and I guess being type 1 she just thinks I can do as I please just have another jab!
Your post made me giggle, crocs? NO!? Only joking glad you enjoy your allotment....
I often find the veggie option more appealing I must admit and sometimes I reckon tastier!

Yes I know type 2s who make cakes for meals at friend's houses & sit there & eat 2 or 3 portions in one sitting. One of them recently had treatment for retinopathy but can't see the link between eating massive amounts of sugar and the problems with his sight. Neither do they understand the damage caused by foods such as bread, pasta etc. Other friends recently cooked a meal for me & hubbie which consisted entirely of recipes obtained from the net "for diabetics". However I have been type 1 on low carbohydrate diet now for nearly 56 years (in Feb 2017) so was unable to eat most of their carefully researched & prepared menu. I attempted to explain why but they seemed to think they knew better than me......!!!!
It is always difficult and I find social occasions so difficult, as a type 1 like you. I always seem to guess wrong! Last weekend I went to a friends house for a roast and her son has recently decided to go vegan, so apart from the roast chicken there was a really delicious nut roast! So I had loads of protein with chicken and the nut roast, couldn't even be tempted by pudding I was so full and good levels when I got home! winner! I now need to make nut roast!
