Hi all, I have been type 1 for just over 2 years, I am managing it ok, I am probably healthier now than ever, apart from a few low sugars which I can identify before they happen i have never really had any problems.
that is until last night, Now please don't laugh at what i am about to share, I wanted to know if anyone else had experienced the same thing.
last night I checked my blood and it was 29, I couldn't remember if i took my slow acting insulin so took some and 8 units of quick, I check it again about an hour later and it was coming down, I went to bed and got up around 1am to go to the loo, I check my blood again and they were 9 so off to sleep i went, now some time later i was dreaming of this very very sweet sickly smell, I have never had a dream where i could smell something, it was so intense and felt so real, to the point i thought it had woke me up but i could still smell it, I tried to get out of bed to go to the loo again but i just couldn't move, i almost wet my bed, i certainly leaked it was at that point my husband shook me and i was able to come round, fortunately before i wet the bed, I checked my blood again and it was 3.5.
I don't know if the smell was my body trying to wake me but i know for a short time i was unconscious and its left me feeling quite scared this morning, if my husband had not been there, i would have wet my bed, i haven't done that before, not even as a child and i still cant get the smell from my dream out of my head.

Heya @michaela2015 I haven't had this experience myself, I will normally have very vivid dreams before waking up to a hypo so I think what you've experienced is unusual, but then it's interesting how our brains react and respond to low blood glucose levels, everyone seems to experience this in different ways, as long as you understand why you went low as it's advisable to try and avoid going low in your sleep, so do you think you could of double dosed on your basal as it sounds like this is what happened ?

I found your comments I quoted above to be interesting. Do you often deal with levels that high?

I'd bet money that it was your high reading of 29 mmol/l that caused your strange dream rather than your 3.5 mmol/l reading. A reading of 29 mmol/l can be life-threatening, and our bodies often see it that way. When insulin cannot get our blood sugar down to normal levels, our kidneys begin working extra hard trying to filter out that excess glucose. That's likely why you had to get up at night to go to the loo (I'm in the USA so hopefully I'm using the correct slang).

Unfortunately, I have a bit of personal experience with something similar. It's embarrassing, but I want to share it in hopes that it may help you and others:

Prior to my t1d diagnosis, I had all of the telltale symptoms including the excessive thirst and frequent urination. Admittedly, it had gone on for more than 6 months, but I was a hard-headed male.

One night just before I finally saw a doctor, I had a dream about urinating in my pants (the kind of dream where you're giving a speech in front of thousands of people and then it happens). I remember that it seemed incredibly real. Eventually, I woke up to use the loo (which was normal to do every 1-2 hours throughout the night). I realized that it wasn't just a dream and it had actually happened. Long story short, it was about that time that I finally came to terms with the fact that my body was trying to tell me something as that sort of thing didn't happen to me when I was 4 years old and it certainly shouldn't have happened at 27 years old.

The point I'm trying to make it that I would absolutely believe that your body was trying to tell you something with this dream and all the signs point to your hyper rather than your hypo.

bodywise the body is wise... once when at hospital very very ill and with sodium-water drop in my arm, I dreamt that the rain pouring down on me was made of cocoa-water it was a very realistic dream and I was trying to eat the drops...
Next day they put me on a potassium-water drop as I was far too low in potassium, and later I found out that cocoa is high in potassium...; guess my body was telling me what to eat...

Hi @michaela2015 . Fully understand what you're saying. Over the years I've had my fair share of hypos whilst sleeping, these hypos have always been accompanied by the most terrifying nightmare's. In this case the actual theme of the nightmare's is not relevant but like yourself I seem able to recall the nightmare with more than just memory.
You say you can still recall the smell, although I've never recalled a smell I have in every instance been able to recall the nightmare and get the same feeling of utter fear, desperation and panic. This happens in the cold light of day and has lasted for weeks even months.
