Type 1s: Advice wanted!

I wasn't telling you off @lcarter :) Just saying what I did. We all deserve the odd treat :) And maybe you have more self-control than me : D

You could try swapping your Muller Lite for Greek yoghurt. I much prefer that and you can add a few berries or just have it by itself.

Edited to add, I just thought - could there be hormonal reasons affecting you (female hormones) The only time I've ever put on weight was when I was on the Pill.

Hi Azure, do you mind me asking what you snack on? just looking to steal some ideas :)

I don't mind at all :) The simple answer is whatever I can find : D

But in more detail - flapjacks (prepackaged so sure of carbs rather than a huge bakery portion), cereal bars, biscuits (digestives and cheese, shortbread, crackers, etc), fruit and cheese or peanut butter, a glass of milk plus biscuit, low sugar buns (homemade), cheese, nuts, etc.

If I'm going to be active after my snack, I choose the higher sugar treats, and if I'm not or my BS is at the top end of normal I choose cheese, nuts and meat and pickles or raw veg.

So - it depends on the snack's 'function' and other things like the time of day :)

Ah cool thanks, must admit I can never get my levels stable for long enough to try bolusing between meals (apart from corrections!) nuts and cheese etc I might be able to get away with though :)

I bolus for my carby snacks (just done that now for my afternoon snack :) )

I can only talk, about me personally as we're all different but I've never had any issues with bolusing for snacks. I don't eat massively carby snacks unless I'm having a treat (eg when I'm out) and my normal snacks are usually around 20g carbs approx but anywhere from 10g to 25/30g. I tend to stick to times for my snacks (approx times) and I'm pretty confident about what my blood sugar will do.

If you feel you could, try a small carby snack. It might be less of a disaster than you think :) A digestive and cheese, for example, is only 10g carbs. Not that I'm encouraging you to,eat things if you don't want to, but I do think the insistence by some HCPs that snacks must be no carb or are bad somehow is wrong. We're all individuals.

Edited to add that if you're saying your BS is often high, then No I wouldn't eat carbs when above 7 approx. If you're often running high, then a basal test is boring but very useful, as is adjusting your meal time ratios. Mine vary during the year.

Um......I'm quite happy with my diet, thank you! And my control is excellent :)

I don't 'need' to eat before exercise, I choose to have a snack and I also make adjustments to my insulin.

And my snacks aren't high sugar!

A biscuit is a one off?? We all have different dietary needs and preferences. I'm happy with my choIces, thanks - as is my consultant and DSN.

Sorry @azure! I thought op posted that. I was replying to the queries posted in the original post. i.e helping keep sugars low and consistent.

Please ignore the above, wasn't intended to you!! Apologies!

Thanks for that @azure, I wouldn't say often high more unpredictable (or unprofessional if you believe my auto correct) I'm fairly sure that my basal isn't really right but on what I'm on at the moment (7) I gradually go up if I don't move much during the day but I do drop by around 5 during the night so don't want to up it any more (and if I have 6 to combat the night drops I can't keep it under 10 the next day no matter what qa ratios or corrections I use)... Anyway I'm hijacking the op's thread, sorry!

@staffsmatt If your basal isn't working, maybe look at trying a change of insulin and/or splitting it or moving the time you inject.

I've found I've had to be very pro-active to get the tools for good control, so do explore other options if you think they'd help.

Thanks . I'm currently trying on Tresiba which is better than lantus and doesn't give me a bad reaction like levemir did. It does have limited flexibility though unfortunately. Still going to the clinic again in January so I'll see what they say . Thanks again!
