Type 1: High sugars before bed

Hi,

I was diagnosed in September so I am a little new to all of this. Early November I began the honeymoon period which I think is coming to an end. I am getting good sugar readings 2 hrs after eating but for the last few days have been getting unusually high readings ranging from 12-14 when I go to bed. For example, tonight I ate at 6pm and at 8pm I had a reading of 6.2. Then when I just checked at 22:30 it was 12.2. Does anyone know if this is because I am not taking enough Lantus?

Thanks

Hi @JenniferAnne2016 :)

Did youneat anything particularly fatty? Fatty meals can give you a delayed rise.

It could be that you need more basal, but as you're newly diagnosed, it would be best to check with your nurse for advice.

When do you take your Lantus? How is your blood sugar when you wake up?

My dinner wasn't particularly fatty today and somedays when I have seen this pattern it hasn't been fatty at all - 3bean soup. My blood sugars have been getting steadily higher in the morning . I was waking up between 4-6 but it is now always between 7-8. I was taking 4 Lantus (was 10 initially but then the honeymoon period began and my nurse decreased it to 4) but I increased it to 5 and am now taking 6. I take it at 8am in the morning. It is quite hard to get hold of my nurse.

Thanks for your super quick response

It does sound Like your sugars are gradually getting higher, so my suspicion would be that it may be connected to your basal.

I'm going to tag @himtoo and @noblehead as I think they've used Lantus (I haven't)

After the festive season is over, you could try a basal test to check if your basal is at the correct level.

hi there @JenniferAnne2016
welcome to the forum !! :)

taking your Lantus dose at 8 Am would suggest to me that you are not getting full 24 hour coverage from your dose ( it can vary between individuals)
possibly moving the dose to 6pm or 10pm could help the morning readings. -- do discuss this with your Diabetic nurse for advice first

with a diagnosis in September you are only a maximum of 16 weeks into the D journey.
there are potentially a number of reasons for the results you are getting.
I would suggest getting a copy of the book Think Like A Pancreas and I would definitely do some basal testing soon.
Also do keep pestering your Diabetic Nurse - she is meant to offer you guidance in these early days until you gain more confidence.

Then when I just checked at 22:30 it was 12.2. Does anyone know if this is because I am not taking enough Lantus?

Difficult to say as you ate at 8pm, the best way of knowing if it's your basal (lantus) or your insulin-to-carb ratio is wrong is to do a basal test, during a basal test your bg shouldn't rise or fall by more than1.7mmol/l if your basal dose is correct. The following explains how to do a basal test throughout a 24 hour period:

Probably best that you make contact with your DSN and run it all by them first. Good luck.

Thank you very much for all of your help. I have bought Think Like a Pancreas and it is great. I haven't finished it yet. I will definitely do a basal test after the festive period - that basal test link is very useful.

I also wondered if I wasn't getting a full 20hr coverage which is what I have heard Lantus is supposed to do. Are there benefits to splitting the basal dose? Half at 8am and half at 8pm?

My first DB,who was amazing, has changed jobs and my new DB is unable to give out advice without checking with a consultant so it is a little difficult. I'm very thankful that there is such a wealth of knowledge online. Thanks again.
